The Huskies captured their 31st Big East championship on Monday night by routing Villanova.

The University of Connecticut women's basketball team continued its perfect season on Monday night by beating Villanova 90-51 in the Big East Tournament final at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

The Huskies are now 34-0 and on track to earn the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament when the brackets are revealed on March 15. They will be the presumptive favorite to win the national title for the second straight season. UConn has won 12 national titles in program history.

Our own Jami Leabow wrote a great write-up on the win vs. Villanova and you can read it here.

History nearly made

The 90-51 win was nearly the biggest win in Big East title game history, according to UConn Athletics:

A 3-pointer by Kelsey Joens with just a few seconds left helped Villanova avoid matching the worst loss in Big East final history. UConn beat Boston College by 42 points in 2002.

It's been that kind of season for the Huskies, who have won 33 of 34 games by double-digits. The only single-digit win was an early-season victory against nationally-ranked Michigan (72-69).

The Huskies won each game in the Big East Tournament by an average of 44.3 points. Connecticut has captured all six Big East Tournament titles since it rejoined the conference.

--The UConn football team, now under the direction of new head coach Jason Candle, finalized another round of coaching hires this week. The Huskies are coming off a 9-4 season and a trip to the Fenway Bowl, where they were beaten by Army.

The Huskies have a solid foundation that was laid by previous head coach Jim Mora, but there is work to be done to replace outgoing senior receiver Skyler Bell and quarterback Joe Fagnano. Bell is expected to be taken in the upcoming NFL Draft and continues to move up draft boards.

--The UConn men's basketball team went 27-4 in the regular season and 17-3 within the Big East to earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big East Tournament, which begins on Wednesday. The Huskies will open play on Thursday against the winner of Marquette and Xavier. Marquette just beat Dan Hurley's team in the final game of the regular season on Saturday 68-62.

UConn likely needs a tournament title to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Even then, it wouldn't be a certainty.
