The longtime head coach has quite a lot to choose from...

Here’s a great debate for UConn women's basketball fans to have.

Start with this statement: “You gotta put together your all-time UConn team, by position – playmaker, rebounder, screener – like five players … that mesh together.”

Well, Geno Auriemma appeared on “The Hoops HQ Show” and was asked this same question by co-host Andy Katz. Put on the spot, Auriemma came up with the team he’d put together, position by position.

“Man, that's a hard one because, you know, we've had so many great players,” replied Auriemma, who is in his 41st season as UConn head coach.

“Sue Bird is the greatest playmaker maybe in the history of basketball -- college basketball, pro basketball -- I don't care. And then [Diana] Taurasi may be the whatever you want to describe her as. I think Tina Charles is probably the best rebounder, the best, you know, most forceful kid that we've had in there, and they've played together on Olympic teams.”

His remaining two? Start with Breanna Stewart.

“Stewie, being Stewie, meshes with everybody and is unguardable and is at that level a playmaker. That other one goes to Maya Moore, you know, and it's funny because I coached that team at the Olympics. So yeah, if somebody said pick one team, that's the five I would put out.”

It’s a great team, starting with two Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame members – Bird and Moore – and Taurasi, who will join them as soon as she is eligible. Charles and Stewart, still active in the WNBA, will be strong candidates, too. Bird just had her number retired by the program.

UConn’s all-time roster is an embarrassment of riches – so much so that Auriemma could have named another team or two that could challenge the group he came up with.

Think Rebecca Lobo. Paige Bueckers. Katie-Lou Samuelson. Napheesa Collier. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis. Shea Ralph. Kerry Bascom. Kia Nurse. And more.

Next for the Current Huskies

The No. 1 UConn women (26-0, 15-0 Big East) are playing at Marquette (16-9, 10-6) Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. The game will be televised by FS1.

UConn stands 23-1 all-time vs. Marquette. The Huskies prevailed 89-53 in the first meeting between the teams this season on Dec. 17 in Hartford.

The Huskies have won 62 consecutive league games, including Big East tournament contests.

On Wednesday, the Huskies defeated Creighton 94-44 at home in Gampel Pavilion. Allie Ziebell scored 20 points off the bench and Azzi Fudd added 19 to lead UConn. Sarah Strong contributed 17 points and seven rebounds.
