The former Huskies coach is getting more than $2 million per season, with several bonuses available.

After leaving the University of Connecticut football program this week, Jim Mora's contract details with Colorado State are out. They are extensive, with numerous bonuses available, so we will chronicle the main points here.

Base salary

Mora gets a five-year deal worth between $2 and $3 million each year.

  • 2026: $2.4 million
  • 2027: $2.5 million
  • 2028: $2.6 million
  • 2029: $2.7 million
  • 2030: $2.8 million

For comparison: Mora signed a contract extension through the 2028 season in Dec. of 2024. That extension was going to pay him an average of $2.5 million annually, per ESPN. He made $2.1 million this year as the Huskies went 9-3.

They are still awaiting their bowl game placement.

Notable bonuses

--He gets a $100,000 signing bonus, as well as a $150,000 retention bonus if he's still in good standing as an employee on Feb. 1 following each season.

--He also gets bonuses based on wins per season, which begin at six wins. He only gets the highest-paying bonus, which ends at 12 regular season wins. That is $400,000.

--He also gets bonuses for participating in a league title game, and that is overridden by a bonus given for a league title game win.

--He gets bonuses based on College Football Playoff appearances. He gets $200,000 for reaching the Round of 16 and then those bonuses increase based on each round. Those bonuses are allowed to stack on top of each other.

Buyout news

Mora owes UConn $1.5 million, which Colorado State is set to pay. The buyout is owed because Mora left before Dec. 31.

Assistant coach pool

Mora gets $5 million to build out his staff.

What's next for the Huskies

As stated, UConn will wait for its bowl game placement. The Huskies have won nine games in consecutive years for the first time in program history. Offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis will coach them in that game. He's up for the Broyles Award as the top assistant coach in college football and he should get an opportunity to compete for the head coaching job moving forward.

Why did Mora leave?

We won't know his official motivation until he has an introductory press conference at Colorado State. All we can really say is that it likely wasn't a financial decision. The two deals are very close in terms of compensation. Mora has roots on the West Coast, so perhaps it was more of a family decision.
