No. 3 UConn Nearly Folds Late, But Holds Off Georgetown in Big East Win cover image

UConn went 2-of-8 from the free-throw line down the stretch, but they ultimately beat the Hoyas.

The University of Connecticut men's basketball earned its 18th win of the season on Saturday afternoon, though it wasn't easy, as they beat Georgetown by just two: 64-62.

The No. 3 Huskies are now 18-1 and 8-0 inside Big East play. The Hoyas are 9-9 and 1-6, as they continue to struggle to win close contests.

Here's what you need to know:

Balanced attack

Dan Hurley's team had four different players score in double-figures, but nobody had more than 15. Tarris Reed Jr. had 15 while Silas Demary Jr. had 12, Braylon Mullins had 11 and Solo Ball had 10.

Inside the box score

--Georgetown shot 44 percent (25-of-57), but they also hit just five three-pointers, going 5-of-14.

--The Huskies were out-rebounded by six, 40-34.

--Georgetown had more assists than Connecticut (13-11).

--UConn's biggest lead was only 10.

--Georgetown also had four players in double-figures, with Vince Iwuchukwu and KJ Lewis each scoring 12.

What else worked well

Reed was fantastic early in the game and he set a tone in the first half with 11 quick points, but he had just four over the final 30 minutes. UConn would do well to keep him involved in the offense throughout.

He also had 11 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Eight of his rebounds were on the offensive end. He was in foul trouble, finishing with four, but he still played 30 of 40 minutes.

Needs improvement

A bad shooting day can be excused as just an off-day, and it should be for senior Alex Karaban. The two-time national champion went just 2-of-11 from the floor and 1-of-6 from three-point range, scoring only seven points. He had five rebounds.

Furthermore, the Huskies went 2-of-8 from the free-throw line down the stretch, allowing Georgetown to have an opportunity to tie the game when the score of 63-60.
