The Huskies fall into the loser's bracket and must win their next three games to advance to the next round. One more loss, and the season is over.
When the UConn media people put together a highlight video of the 2026 Huskies softball team, it surely won’t include footage of the second inning of their game against Texas A&M on Friday.
Playing in the first game of the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on their home field in College Station, Texas, the Aggies scorched the Huskies 17-3. Texas A&M scored 13 runs in the second inning to put the game well in hand.
The game ended after five innings because of run rules.
Texas A&M batted around twice in the second inning, sending 19 runners to the plate. The Aggies scored 13 runs on 10 hits and an error. The Huskies also were charged with two passed balls, a wild pitch and three batters hit by pitches.
The 13 runs scored in the second inning are the most by Texas A&M in the postseason in program history.
The big blasts
In the inning, already up 5-0, Texas A&M’s Ariel Kowalewski hit a grand slam, followed by consecutive solo home runs from Micaela Wark and Kelsey Mathis.
UConn freshman pitcher Caprice Bohmer could muster just one out in the second inning, and it took three relievers to finally shut down the Aggies. Jessica Walter got the final out of the inning on a strikeout, then pitched the remainder of the game.
Bohmer (13-10) took the loss. Texas A&M’s Sidne Peters (15-5) got the win.
The Huskies got on the scoreboard in the third inning when Savannah Ring hit a 231-foot home run to left field to make the score 13-1.
Texas A&M scored four more runs to go up 17-1 but the Huskies added two in the fifth on RBIs from Cat Petteys and Kaitlyn Breslin.
The Huskies finished with four hits and three errors. The Aggies scored their 17 runs (12 earned) on 14 hits and four walks.
Both teams left four on base.
The loser's bracket
With the loss, Big East champion UConn (31-27) fell into the loser’s bracket of the College Station Region and will play McNeese State at 5:30 ET on Saturday. ESPN+ will stream the game.
Texas A&M finished tied for fourth place in the Southeastern Conference. The Aggies will face Arizona State, an 8-0 winner over McNeese in five innings on Friday.
The winner of the loser’s bracket game will play the loser of the winner's backet on Saturday for the right to play the last remaining unbeaten time for the chance to advance in the NCAA Tournament.
