In today's era of NIL, the transfer portal and the NBA, Karaban is a unicorn.

The No. 4 University of Connecticut men's basketball team will wrap up its regular season on Saturday afternoon (12:30 p.m. ET) on the road against Marquette.

A 27-3 overall and 17-2 inside the Big East, the Huskies are looking to capture the Big East regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in the looming Big East tournament.

Furthermore, they are knocking on the door of a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament which begins later this month.

Part of the reason for UConn's success in 2025-26 is the leadership and productivity of senior big man Alex Karaban, who was just enshrined into the Huskies of Honor before Saturday's win over Seton Hall.

A two-time national champion who is going for his third title in four years, Karaban is a unicorn in today's college game.

As noted by Isaac Trotter of CBS Sports and 24/7 Sports, Karaban is one of just three scholarship players in the Big East to enter a program as a freshman and stay for all four or five years.

There are only 22 high-major scholarship players who will celebrate Senior Night this week, having played at just one place. Mississippi State's Shawn Jones Jr. is the only SEC senior to finish where he started.

Dozens of coaching changes and the transfer portal have led to this

Coaching changes and the portal are part of the issue for college basketball, but so is NIL. Players have begun chasing the money and are increasingly willing to move schools because of new financial opportunities. And of course, the allure of the NBA also causes players to leave early.

But Karaban has elected to stay in the stable environment at Connecticut before heading to the NBA, where he is expected to be a draft pick later this year.

The Karaban file

From Southborough, Mass., Karaban is averaging 13.3 ppg while shooting 48.8 percent from the floor and 41.5 percent from three-point range. In his career, he's a 12.4 ppg scorer who shoots 38.2 percent from three.

In addition to his two national titles, Karaban is the greatest winner in program history. He was an All-Big East selection last season and could earn himself some more hardware at the conclusion of this campaign.

Even if he doesn't, he's one of the most beloved players in program history. Hence why he was put in the Huskies of Honor before his career even ended.

He's now a top ten scorer in program history and he's likely to end as the all-time leader in three-pointers made.
