All is well in the world of University of Connecticut men's basketball. The Huskies, seeded No. 2 in the Big East Tournament, blew out Xavier in the quarterfinals on Thursday night in order to advance to Friday's night's semifinal against underdog Georgetown.
That's far different than six days ago, when UConn was getting upset by sub-.500 Marquette to close out the regular season, costing themselves a share of the Big East regular season title. Head coach Dan Hurley was also ejected at the end of that game and fined $25,000 by the Big East.
However, in a nice gesture, Hurley revealed on Thursday that his players actually offered to pay some of his fine. He said he couldn't accept the money of course, but he pointed to that as a reason why his players are a special group.
"...How nice of a moment was that? Obviously it would be illegal, so I couldn't accept it, but there were guys raising their hand: 'I'll give $1,000, $500, $2500..."
From our own Jami Leabow:
"Alex Karaban scored 11 points in the opening half on 4-of-6 shooting – 3 of 5 from 3-point range –after being held to just two points on free throws after and 0-for-6 performance against Marquette.
Tarris Reed Jr. also scored 11 points and had 10 rebounds in the half.
Xavier came out of the locker room after the half with new energy, rattling off seven straight points to cut the deficit to 13. But Braylon Mullins’ 3-pointer followed by a jumper quickly restored the UConn lead to 18, and the Huskies went on to take a wire-to-wire win.
Mullins also blocked three shots.
Solo Ball, a finalist for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year award, led UConn with 19 points. Reed finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds, and Karaban scored 15."
UConn Huskies forward Tarris Reed Jr. (5) is recognized for his 1000 career points with head coach Dan Hurley by his side before the start of the game against the Georgetown Hoyas at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. David Butler II-Imagn Images--The University of Connecticut women's basketball team, ranked No. 1 in the nation, is awaiting its placement/matchup in the NCAA Tournament.
