The University of Connecticut men's basketball team was upset by Marquette on Saturday afternoon, losing 68-62 in Milwaukee, Wis.
The No. 4 Huskies end the regular season at 27-4 and a stellar 17-3 in Big East play. They will be the No. 2 seed in next week's Big East Conference tournament. St. John's is the No. 1.
While the loss was certainly disappointing, the end of the game was equally upsetting as head coach Dan Hurley was ejected for his antics in the final seconds.
Hours later, he was punished by the Big East Conference, though there was an important note in the league's press release:
"UConn men's basketball coach Dan Hurley has been fined $25,000 by the BIG EAST for unsportsmanlike conduct in the closing seconds of the March 7 game at Marquette.
With one second left in the game, Hurley received two technical fouls for aggressively confronting a game official, was subsequently ejected from the game, and then failed to leave the court in a timely manner. Initial speculation on the game broadcast indicated possible contact between Hurley and the official; however, a review by the conference office of the officials' game report and available game footage could not confirm physical contact.
“We hold our coaches to high standards of sportsmanlike conduct during game competition, and inappropriate interactions with our officials will not be tolerated,” said BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman."
While this incident was a bad look for Hurley, and the program, it's made less embarrassing by the fact that review could not prove there was physical contact.
It's also important for UConn that this incident did not result in any postseason suspension. Hurley will be with the team when it opens up Big East Tournament play on Thursday against the winner of No. 7/No. 10 matchup.
The full bracket should be released on Saturday night at the conclusion of league play.
