The Huskies are preparing for the game under a coaching crew largely made up of former coach Jim Mora's staff.

New UConn head coach Jason Candle quietly is putting together a staff, with no official announcements made on the Huskies’ website, about newly added assistant coaches.

It’s a fair assumption that nothing is being announced with the Huskies in final preparation for the Fenway Bowl on Saturday and coaches from former head coach Jim Mora’s staff still working in Storrs, Conn.

The lack of an official word on coaches could be out of respect to the Mora crew or even to give Candle a chance to assess them for, potentially, a position on his staff.

Word leaked out Monday night, however, that Candle is expected to add Kerry Dixon to his group as wire receivers coach. Pete Thamel of ESPN shared the news to social media.

“UConn is expected to hire Kerry Dixon as the school’s new wide receivers coach. He’s a veteran coach with stops at Georgia Tech, Florida and time at Toledo under new UConn coach Jason Candle.

“Dixon spent 2022 and 2023 with the Baltimore Ravens as the assistant quarterbacks coach, which included Lamar Jackson’s MVP season. Dixon spent the 2025 season at Kent State.”

Some of Mora’s assistants undoubtedly will join him at Colorado State. One who won’t is offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis, the interim head coach who will lead the Huskies in the bowl game.

He has accepted the OC job at TCU.

Fenway Bowl week

The Huskies (9-3) will be vying for their second consecutive win in the Fenway Bowl in Boston on Saturday, facing Army (6-6). Game time is 2:15 p.m. ET, and it will air on ESPN.

There’s been no official announcement from UConn as to who will play in the game. Quarterback Joe Fagnano, who rose through the college QB hierarchy in a spectacular season, has a real chance at being selected in the 2026 NFL Draft and has opted out of the game.

All-American wide receiver Skyler Bell said he is playing, even though he doesn’t need additional exposure for NFL scouts. He said last week he was trying to convince some of the Huskies who have decided to enter the transfer portal to join the team in Boston for one final time.

Standout running back Cam Edwards has said he will put his name in the portal when it opens Jan. 2, but The Action Network is reporting he will play in the bowl game.

The outlet reported the names of 11 UConn players expected to enter the portal.

It is not clear who will quarterback the Huskies in Boston.
