The University of Connecticut football program added two new coaches to its staff on Sunday, bringing in Jay Anderson as the safeties coach and Mickey Jacobs as the linebackers coach.
They are the latest additions to the staff being put together by first-year head coach Jason Candle, who just came in from Toledo.
A coach with Northeast ties, Anderson spent the last four seasons at Yale, the last three of which saw him serve as co-defensive coordinator. He helped the Bulldogs win Ivy League titles in 2022, 2023 and 2025. In addition to Yale, he's coached at Johns Hopkins, Notre Dame College and Oberlin, where he served as head coach for six seasons.
He played collegiately at Toledo, and though he didn't play for Candle there, that connection surely helped him. He helped the Rockets get to the Motor City Bowl in both 2001 and 2002.
Jacobs comes to Storrs after spending four seasons at Duquesne, the latter two of which he served as defensive coordinator. In addition to coaching with the Dukes, he's also been at Buffalo and Pitt. He played at Duquesne and helped the Dukes advance to the FCS playoffs in 2015.
Nunzio Campanile, offensive coordinator
He just spent three years on the staff at Syracuse, working with quarterbacks and tight ends.
As noted by the Syracuse website, in his first year quarterbacks broke or tied 24 different program individual and team passing or total offense records (career, season and single-game) and starting quarterback Kyle McCord finished in the top-10 of Heisman Trophy voting after setting a new ACC single-season passing record.
He helped the Orange win 10 games and the Holiday Bowl in 2024.
However, this year, it was a different story. After quarterback Steve Angeli got hurt in the fourth game of the season, the Orange failed to win another game. A rotating group of young quarterbacks all got chances, but none were really prepared to play. The Orange had one of the worst offenses in the country, and its 20.2 ppg total was outside the Top-100.
In addition to Syracuse, Campanile has served on staff at Rutgers. He was also the head coach of high school power Bergen Catholic and he was on staff at the famed Don Basco Prep.
Ryan Manalac, defensive coordinator
A former linebacker at Cincinnati, Manalac has also coached at Michigan State, Valparaiso, Bucknell and Old Dominion (in addition to Pitt, where he just came from). He was the defensive coordinator at Old Dominion and Bucknell, so that means he's called plays and run a defense before, which will be a big benefit for Candle's first staff.
Manalac played four years for the Bearcats, appearing in 51 total games. He had 115 solo tackles, one interception, 1.5 sacks and four forced fumbles.
