Oskar Giltay previously played in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and now he'll bring his experience to Storrs.
After hosting him for a visit earlier this week, the University of Connecticut men's basketball team has secured a commitment from big man Oskar Giltay, who previously played at Stanford.
Joe Tipton of On3 had the information on social media.
After losing Tarris Reed Jr. (graduation) and Eric Reibe (transfer portal), Dan Hurley's team was in need of big men and the 6'10 Giltay can help fill that need.
Giltay is a Belgium native who played in 32 games for the Cardinal this past season. In addition to his height, he's listed at 235 pounds. He played just under 15 minutes a game for Stanford. He averaged 3.3 ppg and 4.1 rebounds in those almost-15 minutes, meaning he's certainly proficient on the glass.
Here's more on what you need to know:
Why the Giltay commitment is a good fit
1) Again, the Huskies needed to replace lots of height in their frontcourt, so Giltay's size alone is an important thing.
2) The Big East is one of the most physical leagues in the country, and if Giltay can grab four rebounds a game in just under 15 minutes, that means he's looking at 8-10 rebounds a game with more consistent playing time. That's a big thing in this league, which UConn finished second in in 2025-26.
3) Though he didn't play a majority of the minutes at Stanford, Giltay brings power conference experience. For a program that is looking to get back to the national championship game for the fourth time in five years, that's a very valuable thing.
Where the questions lie
It's not a question of if Giltay is a good player, it's more a question of how he fits in stylistically. Reed and Reibe were two traditional big men that liked to play in the interior. Giltay is a stretch player who attempted more than three-pointers per game in his almost-15 minutes.
If he plays consistent minutes, he's potentially a guy that will take 5-6 three's a game. How does that fit with Hurley's offense? Is he happy to have the diversity of skillsets, or does he ultimately want a traditional big man? We will have to see how Giltay's game plays and evolves in his time in Storrs.
The other thing to wonder? If Giltay is more of a stretch player, is he actually a replacement for Alex Karaban and not the two big men? That also remains to be seen.

Friday begins night two of the NFL Draft, with Huskies' wide receiver Skyler Bell expected to be taken in the third round. He was named an All-American in 2025.
