The University of Connecticut women's basketball team rolled over Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon to improve to 21-0 on the campaign and a perfect 11-0 inside Big East play.
The Huskies overcame a quick turnaround to beat the Pirates, as they had just played on Thursday. This game was moved up a day in order to beat the snowstorm that is currently barreling through the Northeast. However, the short rest on the front side will turn into a long rest on the back end, as now UConn will have another day to prepare for Xavier, who they will see on Wednesday night (8:00 p.m. ET) at Gampel Pavilion.
In addition to getting to see the No. 1 team in the nation, the first 600 fans in attendance will also get an incredible promotional giveaway: A Geno Auriemma bobblehead.
The bobblehead shows Auriemma standing on top of Gampel with an inscription reading "Coach Geno."
Our own Jami Leabow recently wrote about Auriemma's coaching future, as well as his accolades, so most of this next portion comes from a segment of her full article:
Auriemma is the most successful basketball coach in NCAA Division I history among coaches of both men and women. His record entering the Huskies’ game on Wednesday is 1,271-165 (.891), giving him the most victories of any coach. Among those losses, 39 of them came in his first three seasons on the job.
His teams have won 12 national titles and gone undefeated six times. Their record in 36 NCAA Tournament appearances is 142-24.
The great John Wooden is next on the list with 10 NCAA titles at UCLA.
Auriemma has nine Associated Press Coach of the Year and 19 conference Coach of the Year titles – and the case could be made that he deserved more honors.
--The UConn men, ranked No. 2 in the nation, needed overtime on Saturday to beat Villanova. Despite the close nature of the game, there several historic accomplishments: Solo Ball became the first Huskies player in 15 years to accomplish this specific feat, while the UConn defense did something no other high major team has done all season. Furthermore, Silas Demary Jr. scored the 1,000th point of his career.
--Super freshman Braylon Mullins left the game with a head injury and is now in the concussion protocol.
