The No. 1 Huskies received their Big East regular-season championship trophy after the game, with the women standing on the court at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Conn., wearing T-shirts to commemorate the title. Blue and white pieces of confetti fell from the rafters, raining on the players.
For coach Geno Auriemma, who is in his 41st season, the confetti shower is nothing new. But he enjoys seeing it through the eyes of the young women on his team who earned the honor for the first time.
"It doesn't matter how many conference championships you've won," he said after the game.
"There's a lot of excitement for those kids who have never experienced this before. That's kind of what makes it fun."
Azzi Fudd, a member of the 2025 national championship team, summed up the feeling immediately after the game to TNT Sports.
“You come to UConn to win a championship,” said Fudd, a graduate student who has spent five years in Storrs. “All of them. First the regular season, then the Big East tournament and then the national championship. To be able to accomplish this with this team during my last year is special.”
The Huskies clinched the Big East title with their victory against Villanova last week.
If the regular season is the measuring stick for things to come, Fudd and her teammates have a great shot at hoisting another trophy or two.
Entering their final regular-season game Sunday night against St. John’s, the Huskies are an undefeated 30-0, 19-0 in the Big East. A huge crowd is expected to see the Huskies and the Red Storm at Madison Square Garden.
St. John’s is 21-9, 11-8 in the conference. The Huskies beat the Red Storm at home on Jan. 7, 88-43.
The Huskies have defeated five ranked opponents on the season by a total of 100 points – a margin of 20 points per game.
St. John’s faced one team ranked at the time they played – then-No. 18 Oklahoma State – and won 74-67. The Cowgirls no longer are ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
And here’s one more interesting nugget of information.
The Huskies have won both their regular-season and conference titles every season since 2014.
