Toledo played Louisville Tuesday afternoon in the Boca Raton Bowl.
Wouldn’t the typical UConn fan just say “ho hum” to that game?
Umm, no. Not this season at least.
New UConn coach Jason Candle came from Toledo, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see multiple players express their intention to leave the Rockets program and enter the transfer portal come Wednesday.
Destination? Storrs, Conn., perhaps.
Whether any of Candle’s 2025 players follow him to UConn remains to be seen. What is known is that at least five players who signed with Toledo earlier this month – before his announced departure to UConn – are headed to Storrs.
On Tuesday, 6-foot-7 tight end Jackson Mangham announced his commitment to UConn. From Olentangy High School in Lewis Center, Ohio, he was ranked as the No. 39 player at his position by the 247Sports composite.
As a high school senior, Mangham caught 32 passes for 412 yards and scored four touchdowns.
On Monday, it was 6-foot-6 defensive lineman Makijah Latiker from Trinity Christian in Fayetteville, N.C., who said he was flipping from Toledo to UConn. In his senior season, Latiker had 37 tackles (16 for loss), three sacks and an interception.
Also coming to UConn is linebacker/edge rusher Tyrique Harris, a three-star prospect from Clearwater (Fla.) Central Catholic. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Harris had 113 tackles (nine for loss), three sacks and an interception in his senior season.
More UConn stories
He will be joined by Logan Barnes, a 6-foot-4 receiver from Marion (Ind.) High School, where he played quarterback and wide receiver. Playing the role part-time, Barnes caught 16 passes for 216 yards.
Bo Polston, a 6-foot-2 quarterback from Decatur Central High School in Indianapolis, is the fifth former commit from the Rockets headed to UConn and was the first to join Candle and the Huskies.
The Huskies (9-3) will be vying for their second consecutive win in the Fenway Bowl in Boston on Saturday, facing Army (6-6). Game time is 2:15 p.m. ET, and it will air on ESPN.
There’s been no official announcement from UConn as to who will play in the game. Quarterback Joe Fagnano, who rose through the college QB hierarchy in a spectacular season, has a real chance at being selected in the 2026 NFL Draft and has opted out of the game.
All-American wide receiver Skyler Bell said he is playing, even though he doesn’t need additional exposure for NFL scouts. He said last week he was trying to convince some of the Huskies who have decided to enter the transfer portal to join the team in Boston for one final time.
Standout running back Cam Edwards has said he will put his name in the portal when it opens Jan. 2, but The Action Network is reporting he will play in the bowl game.
