The Utes secure a physical home-state standout as the tenacious safety chooses Morgan Scalley’s defensive vision over high-profile offers from Michigan, Ole Miss, and rival BYU.
The Utah Utes landed the commitment of Diesel Dart on Thursday night. The three-star, tenacious two-way player is exactly the type Morgan Scalley loves in the secondary and will be able to contribute immediately.
Diesel, the brother of New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart, recently toured the Salt Lake City campus and took the in-state route to continue his football career. The Utes wanted to snag Dart early in the process with other schools expected to make a run at him. But one of the top defenders in the Beehive State will enjoy his time near home.
At 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, Dart was in the midst of weighing his options with many on the table. He held offers from BYU, Michigan, Ole Miss, Arizona, Auburn and others. Jaxson left the state despite the possibility of putting one of the Utah schools on the map before his eventual NFL career. However, his brother won't be following in his footsteps. What makes the move more interesting is the opportunity to commit to a bigger program was there, but was of no interest for Dart. That speaks volumes about what Scalley and his staff are trying to build.
The Corner Canyon product is an outstanding two-way player for one of the state's best high school programs. This could be one of Scalley's most underrated moves for his first recruiting class as head coach. Dart's name is well-known in several circles with a profile that continues to grow. At the safety position, he's all about being physical and seeing the entire field. He often eats up receivers in zone coverage and a good tackler.
Corner Canyon went 12-1 and captured a Utah 6A championship with Dart racking up 48 tackles, 5 PBU, 2 INT, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble in 12 games on defense, according to MaxPreps. He also hauled in seven catches for 131 yards and a touchdown on offense.
One of Dart's underrated qualities is being a dual-sport athlete with basketball on his list as well. Utah has been one of the Power Four schools who won't shy away from student-athletes in multiple sports. But always football first.
Dart is a significant addition to Utah's 2027 class, which now sits at 12 players. Overall, Scalley and the Utes are making noise, being ranked No. 60 nationally. As of now, there are no players under a three-star rating coming in next year.
