Zach Durfee could have recently been highlighted in one of ESPN's more unique NFL draft features
The 2026 NFL Draft is set to take place Thursday through Saturday in Pittsburgh.
For the Washington Huskies football team, it's not a question about how many former Dawgs will hear their names called, it's simply a question of how many.
Former Huskies cornerbacks Ephesians Prysock and Tacario Davis, wide receiver Denzel Boston, running back Jonah Coleman and offensive lineman Carver Willis were all invited to the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine.
Boston has almost universally been considered the most likely first-round draft pick of the bunch. He's considered by many analysts to be a top five receiver available in the draft.
Coleman is ranked anywhere from the second- to fourth-best running back available in the crop. Davis and Prysock raised their respective stocks at the combine and Willis, who played left tackle for Washington in 2025, has risen up boards due to his versatility.
Willis has practiced and worked out for NFL teams as both a guard and center this offseason.
Those five players aren't the only former Huskies looking to take their talents to the NFL and one of those less-heralded players could have recently been highlighted by ESPN.
Every single season in the lead-up to the draft, ESPN writes an article anonymously highlighting one underlooked and undervalued player in the draft. After the event concludes, the publication reveals who the player was and where he was selected/who he signed with.
ESPN's Kalyn Kahler recently published her feature on the 2026 "Prospect X," and there's a lot of similarities to Washington defensive end Zach Durfee.
There are several characteristics mentioned by Kahler that bear similarities to Durfee's career path. For one, Kahler describes "Prospect X" going into a two-point stance and running a drill getting around tackling dummies, indicating the player is either a defensive lineman or linebacker.
Durfee played edge in college.
Kahler also described "Prospect X" started at a small school. Durfee began his career at NCAA Division II university Sioux Falls.
The article from ESPN also mentions a "head-turning" 40-yard dash time at his pro day. Durfee, listed at 6-foot-5 and 258 pounds, was timed with a 4.55-second 40-yard dash at UW's pro day March 15. Durfee also posted an astonishing 39-inch vertical jump.
Perhaps the nail in the coffin of the question over whether or not "Prospect X" is truly Durfee is the added note that the player dealt with injuries in college.
Durfee had his eligibility waivers denied when he transferred to UW in 2023. He played in just six games in 2024 due to injury and missed games against Maryland and Rutgers in '25 after being injured in the game against Ohio State.
"Prospect X's" head coach, who was kept anonymous for obvious reasons for the story, also mentioned he had "NFL buddies."
Huskies head coach Jedd Fisch has been on the coaching staff for the Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots in his career. His offensive coordinator from last season Jimmie Dougherty, also recently took a job with the Seahawks.
We'll have to wait until Durfee is drafted or signed to see whether or not he's "Prospect X." But regardless of if he is or not, the similarities are there. Down to the shocking athleticism and drive. And an NFL team will likely benefit from adding the edge rusher to their roster.
