The Washington Huskies football team has several program alumni in prominent positions in the NFL. One of them is cornerback Trent McDuffie, who became the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history this offseason.

Whereas McDuffie seems to be entering the prime of his career, it seems like another Huskies alumnus' career is at an end.

Former Washington defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka signed a one-year, $1.4 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason and seemed to have a realistic chance to earn consistent playing time.

Tryon-Shoyinka unexpectedly no-showed Eagles OTAs and mandatory minicamp with no reported reason as to his absence.

Per a recent report, Tryon-Shoyinka's absence seems to be due to a decision to step away from football as a whole.

Per a post on "X" from NFL insider Ari Meirov, Tryon-Shoyinka has made the decision to retire from football at 27-years-old.

Tryon-Shoyinka was a native in the Seattle area and attended Hazen High School in Renton, Wash. He opted to stay home in committed to the Huskies for his collegiate career.

The defensive end played with Washington from 2017-19. In his redshirt sophomore year in 2019, he recorded 41 total tackles, including 12.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks and was named second-team All-Pac-12.

Tryon-Shoyinka opted to sit out the COVID-19 pandemic-shortened 2020 season to focus on the 2021 NFL Draft, which ended up paying off.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Tryon-Shoyinka with the last overall pick in the first round, 32nd overall.

Tryon-Shoyinka played with the Bucs from 2021-24 but became a free agent after Tampa Bay declined his fifth-year option.

The former first round pick signed a one-year, $4.75 million contract with the Cleveland Browns before the 2025 season. He played eight games with his new team before being packaged with a seventh-round pick and traded to the Chicago Bears in return for a sixth-round pick Nov. 4, 2025, where he played another eight games.

Tryon-Shoyinka became a free agent again after last season and signed his aforementioned deal with the Eagles.

It seemed like Philadelphia may have been privy to the former Husky's retirement following his no-show to offseason activities, as it signed free agent defensive end A.J. Epenese to a one-year deal following the conclusion of minicamp.

No reason was provided as to the reason for Tryon-Shoyinka's retirement, but injuries could have played a factor. The 27-year-old defensive lineman suffered neck and hip injuries in his career in addition to a concussion.

Tryon-Shoyinka finished his career having played 82 NFL games and registering 160 combined tackles (97 solo), including 22 tackles for loss, and 15 sacks.
