Jake Browning had been let go by the Cincinnati Bengals earlier this week.

Earlier this week, former University of Washington quarterback Jake Browning was let go by the Cincinnati Bengals and allowed to hit free agency.

Reports indicated that the Bengals were interested in bringing him back, but they won't get that chance.

According to a new report from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Browning is signing a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He will backup Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay.

As of this time, the financial portion of the deal is unknown.

About Browning at UW

A prolific passer for the Huskies, Browning played in 53 games in college. He tossed 94 touchdowns in total, including 43 in 2016, which led the Pac-12. He threw for more than 12,000 yards in those four seasons, hitting the 3,000-mark twice. He was named the 2016 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year and finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2018.

Washington played in the Heart of Dallas Bowl, the Peach Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl and the Rose Bowl in his time, winning just the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

About Browning in the NFL

A three-year veteran of the Bengals, Browning has appeared in 17 NFL games, making 10 starts. He's 4-6 in that time with a 68.5 percent completion percentage, six touchdowns and eight interceptions. Despite his modest numbers, he's a capable backup that has had success in spurts, including while filling in for Joe Burrow early in the 2025 season. He helped Cincinnati beat the Jaguars 31-27 in Week 2.

Other Huskies quarterback news

Former Washington star Michael Penix Jr. is now in for a battle with the Atlanta Falcons. Not only is Penix coming back from an ACL sprain that could keep him out until the start of training camp, he's just seen the Falcons sign Tua Tagovailoa to a one-year deal.

While this signing doesn't mean that Penix doesn't have a chance to play for the Falcons in 2026, it's certainly not a great sign of total faith either.

The UW men's basketball team won its opening round game of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday by beating USC 83-79 in overtime. Danny Sprinkle's team is now 16-16 on the season and they'll take on fifth-seeded Wisconsin on Thursday afternoon.

The Badgers are 22-9 and beat Washington 90-73 in February. This will be the first game for Wisconsin in the tournament. Game time is 25 minutes after the conclusion of the first tournament game of the day (9 a.m. PT).
