The Washington Huskies women's basketball team's season ended in the Round of 32 of the NCAA tournament in a 62-59 overtime loss against the TCU Horned Frogs on Sunday at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
The loss marked the end of the second-straight NCAA tournament berth for Washington, which featured the first tourney win since 2017 in a 72-54 win against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on March 20.
A win against the Horned Frogs would have given UW its first Sweet Sixteen berth since the Kelsey Plum-led squad in 2017. But, alas, the Huskies' season came to an end in Texas.
"What an incredible season," Washington head coach Tina Langley said after the game Sunday. "I'm so proud of (the players). Just to sit up with them, it's hard to not be emotional because you love them so much and you know the work they put in and who they are. ... I'm really proud of them."
The Huskies had an opportunity to tie and force the game to a second overtime in the final seconds of the initial OT period. Junior guard Sayvia Sellers' 3-pointer fell short.
"We know they have a great defense," sophomore guard Avery Howell said in a postgame interview. "They have a lot of athletic guards, so that made that challenging. They were pressuring us a lot, I would say. But I think we still found a way and we still put up a lot of points."
The loss finished out the Huskies season 22-11.
One thing that was mentioned after the game was the departing seniors. Four seniors, guards Elle Ladine, Teagan Brown and Hannah Stines and forward Shayla Gillmer were a part of Langley's first recruiting class as head coach of the program.
Senior center Yulia Grabovskaia transferred to the team before this past season from Michigan.
"I'm extremely proud of this team and I think we've grown a lot. Each of us individually and as a collective," Stines, who scored 10 points against TCU, said Sunday. "I'm just really proud of us. I think that you've seen improvement throughout the year and I'm just gonna miss them a lot."
This season was a massive step forward for Langley's Washington program, which went from a First Four exit and a 19-win season last year to four points away from the Sweet Sixteen this season.
Based on Langley's history in retaining players, most of the roster has a good chance at returning next season and will have a legitimate opportunity to take another step forward.
