Running backs Jayden Limar and Trey Cooley won't take part in the early part of the Huskies' offseason program

The Washington Huskies football team approached the transfer portal this offseason with several goals and, for the most part, accomplished them.

One of the needs for the Huskies was to find veteran running backs to replace departures Jonah Coleman and Adam Mohammed.

Coleman, who led Washington in rushing yards (758) and rushing touchdowns (15) last year, opted to enter the 2026 NFL Draft.

Mohammed, who was the Huskies' No. 2 running back behind Coleman and presumptive successor to the latter, opted to enter the portal and take his talents to the Cal Golden Bears.

Washington went out and got two veteran running backs in the transfer portal to replace Coleman and Mohammed: senior Jayden Limar (Oregon) and senior Trey Cooley (Troy).

Limar, a Lake Stevens, Wash., native, had 442 career rushing yards and four touchdowns on 95 carries in three seasons with the Ducks.

Cooley has 1,009 career rushing yards and six touchdowns on 215 carries across five seasons with Louisville, Georgia Tech and Troy. He didn't register a regular season carry with the Trojans due to a season-ending knee injury.

Unfortunately for the Huskies, it will be several months before they see either running back suit up in the purple and gold in practice.

Neither Limar nor Cooley will take part in spring practices, according to comments from head coach Jedd Fisch via an article from On Montlake writer Christian Caple.

Limar will be out for the spring after undergoing ankle surgery and Cooley won't report to the team until summer.

Limar's injury isn't expected to be long-term and he'll likely be full speed by June, according to Fisch.

The news is disappointing for Washington, which will look to establish a hierarchy in the backfield ahead of the 2026 season. But it does provide opportunities to several of the young and more inexperienced running backs on the Huskies roster.

Sophomore Jordan Washington was the running back with the most playing time last season behind Coleman and Mohammed. As a freshman, Washington rushed 27 times for 233 yards and a touchdown in 10 games.

Redshirt freshman Quaid Carr will also be looking to carve out playing time. He took a redshirt year last year. He played two games and ran four times for 14 yards.

The pair of underclassmen will also be bolstered by incoming Class of 2026 true freshmen.

Four-star running back Brian Bonner will look to make an impact. He was ranked as the 128th-best player and seventh-best running back in the '26 class according to 247Sports.

Three-star running back Ansu Sanoe (68th-best running back, third-best player in Oregon per 247Sports) could also jump the line and earn some playing time with an impressive spring.
