The former University of Washington football head coach wanted the job, but he says he doesn't think it's going to happen.
Former University of Washington football coach Rick Neuheisel said on Friday that he doesn't believe he's going to get the head coaching position at Washington State University.
He made the comments to 92.5 FM in Colorado.
Neuheisel did not hide the fact that he was interested in the position earlier this week in an interview with 93.3 KJR, and he also told 92.5 that he would have brought his son Jerry Neuheisel with him as the offensive coordinator. Jerry was with UCLA for the last eight years and helped lead the Bruins to a win over Penn State this season, assuming playcalling duties after an early-season shakeup.
The Cougars are in need of a new coach after Jimmy Rogers bolted for Iowa State.
How far did the interest go?
The elder Neuheisel said he has some conversations regarding the Cougars job, and he indicated how much respect he has for the program and its fans, but he said he believes that the university is in the final stages of its coaching search. At this point, Neuheisel doesn't believe he's in contention.
"I've been having some beginning conversations with Washington State, and I think they're getting toward the end of their search, so I think I am probably not going to get that job..."
About Neuheisel
Now 64 years old, Neuheisel spent 12 years as a head coach between Colorado, Washington and UCLA, however, he hasn't been a collegiate head coach since 2011. Lifetime, he is 87-58. He went 33-16 at Washington over a four-year period from 1999-2002. He has been to eight career bowl games, winning five of them. He went 2-2 in bowl games at UW, winning the Rose Bowl in 2000.
He has served as a longtime sports media personality since his coaching days ended, regularly appearing on CBS Sports. He was also a head coach in the Alliance of American Football (2019).
About the current Huskies
Washington will take the field one more time on Saturday night (5 p.m. PT), as they'll play in the LA Bowl against Boise State. The Huskies are 8-4 under second-year head coach Jedd Fisch, and there's some speculation that Fisch could be a serious candidate for the now-vacant Michigan job.
Boise State just won the Mountain West championship by beating UNLV last Friday.
