Matamatagi Uiagalelei will follow in his older sibling's footsteps by joining the Huskies

SEATTLE — The Washington Huskies football team is on-track to put together the best recruiting class in program history.

The Huskies 2027 recruiting class currently ranks fourth in the country according to 247Sports. If Washington stays on-pace to that current ranking, it will pass its previous program-best recruiting class from 2026, which ranked 12th in the nation.

Currently, the Huskies' '27 recruiting class is comprised of nine commitments. One of those players is three-star defensive lineman Matamatagi Uiagalelei, who has familial ties to the program.

Matamatagi Uiagalelei's older brother, Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei, concluded his collegiate career last year at Washington. It was his only season with the Huskies. He transferred to Seattle after playing three seasons at Arizona.

The elder Uiagalelei finished his lone season in the Pacific Northwest with 20 total tackles (11 solo), including four tackles for loss, two sacks and one pass defended.

Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei took part in Washington's pro day Monday at the Dempsey indoor facility in Seattle. The older of the two Uiagalelei's is still looking to carve out a role in the NFL, joining his older cousin and Los Angeles Chargers quarterback DJ Uiagalelei.

Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei was also asked about Matamatagi's decision to choose the Huskies and, based the former's comments, the program seems to be getting a future key contributor.

"It was honestly his own decision," Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei said Monday. "I was just letting him do his thing. ... (Washington) might be getting a better guy than me. He's smaller than me right now but he works hard. He works really hard. (6-foot-4), lanky, shifty pass rusher. He's a basketball player, so he started off with a crossover. So he's really shifty and a really smart kid. ... Got a good head on his shoulders. Seattle's gonna love him. ... He can play everywhere."

Currently, Washington's '27 recruiting class is comprised of nine players: four-star wide receiver Zerek Sidney, four-star running back Jeremy Adeyanju, three-star wide receiver Braylon Pope, three-star cornerback/athlete Maurice Williams, three-star linebackers Isaiah Leilua, Ethan Coach, Justin Coach and Titus Osterman and Matamatagi Uiagalelei.

The Huskies have found value in their three-star recruits over the last several seasons. Class of 2025 offensive lineman John Mills was a starter last season as a true freshman and was named to several All-Freshman lists.

It will be one more season before Washington sees what the younger Uiagalelei has to offer but if his older brother's comments are anything to go on, it'll be worth the wait.
