Washington Earns Commitment From 3-Star Defensive Lineman cover image

Matamatagi Uiagalelei will be joining the Huskies growing 2027 recruiting class

The Washington Huskies football team grew its 2027 recruiting class Sunday with the latest member from one of the most notable football families of recent years.

Three-star defensive lineman Matamatagi Uiagalelei announced his commitment to the Huskies, choosing to head to Montlake in the Pacific Northwest over offers from other programs such as: Arizona, Arizona State, Miami, Michigan, Missouri and others.

Uiagalelei, who attends Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., is ranked as the 86th-best defensive lineman in his class and the 82nd best player in California according to 247Sports.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound defensive lineman is a part of a notable football family that has produced several star players over the last several years.

He's the younger cousin of current Oregon edge rusher Matayo Uiagalelei and former Clemson, Florida State and Oregon State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, who currently plays quarterback in the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Matamatagi Uiagalelei's older brother, Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei, played with UW in 2025 during head coach Jedd Fisch's first year at the helm of the program.

Uiagalelei is the seventh player to commit to Washington in the class of '27.

The other players to announce their commitment to the Huskies are: four-star wide receiver Zerek Sidney, three-star athlete Maurice Williams, three-star wide receiver Braylon Pope and three-star linebackers Ethan and Justin Coach and Titus Osterman.

Uiagalelei's commitment gave Washington a big jump in the 2027 recruiting class rankings. Before his commitment, the Huskies ranked 12th in the nation in the '27 class.

Uiagalelei's commitment now has Washington ranked seventh. The six teams ahead of the Huskies are, in order: Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Louisville and Nebraska.

The Huskies also remain among the final teams being considered by several four-star recruits, including quarterback Sione Kaho, cornerback Elijah Molden, safety Gavin Williams and edge rusher Zane Rowe.

Washington also has an official visit scheduled with offensive lineman Tye Kennedy, who's father, Lincoln Kennedy, was a two-time All-American offensive lineman with the team in the early 1990s.

At its current pace, the Huskies '27 recruiting class will exceed its '26 class.

Washington's '26 recruiting class ranked 12th in the nation, which was the highest ranking for a singular class in program history. Several players from that group, including five-star offensive lineman Kodi Greene and four-star wide receiver Jordan Clay, are expected to contribute as true freshmen this upcoming season.

Fisch was hired with the reputation as a program rebuilder and he seems well on his way to accomplish just that for the Huskies.
