After a few days of being quiet on the rumor mill, the speculation about University of Washington head football coach Jedd Fisch leaving for the University of Michigan is picking back up.
After Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham agreed a new contract, and after Kalen DeBoer won Friday night's College Football Playoff Game with Alabama, the options are thinning for Michigan, who fired Sherrone Moore for cause last week.
The Athletic seems to think that Fisch may simply be the last big name on the board for the Wolverines job.
Where will Michigan turn, then? Washington coach Jedd Fisch is maybe the most notable potential candidate who has not yet redone his contract with his current school. Fisch spent a couple of seasons as an assistant coach at Michigan early in Jim Harbaugh’s tenure as a head coach of the Wolverines. He is 31-32 in five seasons as head coach, taking over significant rebuilds at both Arizona and Washington.
Simply put, Michigan is one of the highest-profile jobs in the entire country. When they call, you listen. Michigan won the national title in 2023, beating Washington, and has a job on par with Alabama, Texas, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Southern California.
A job of that profile would also allow Fisch to recruit anybody he wants, while still competing in the Big 10 landscape he's learned at UW.
Secondly, the job will pay more money than he makes at Washington, which certainly carries weight as well.
There's no guarantee that the Michigan job is "better" than Washington right now. After the Moore scandal, the athletic department is being investigated, and there is uncertainty around the future of the athletic administration there.
Secondly, Fisch has been seemingly everywhere over the last 20 years of his career. Maybe he just wants to settle down and continue to lay down roots?
Here's a look at Fisch's coaching resume since entering the profession:
He has spent time at Florida, with the Houston Texas, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks, at Miami (Fla.), with the Jacksonville Jaguars and at UCLA. He's also been an assistant with the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots before serving as the head coach at Arizona and Washington.
He just wrapped up his second year after taking over DeBoer, who left for Alabama. The Huskies went 9-4 this season, defeating Boise State in the LA Bowl on Dec. 13. Should Fisch stay at Washington, he'll one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the country still on his roster in Demond Williams Jr.
