Despite rumors to the contrary, it seems that Fisch's reported candidacy for Michigan is exaggerated

Several fans across the college football landscape have had to get used to turmoil and inconsistency over the last several years.

Coaches and fans seem ultimately destined for elsewhere, regardless of conference.

Former Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin, who led the Rebels to a 12-1 record and College Football Playoff berth, was hired to take over the same job at Southeastern Conference (SEC) rivals, LSU.

Former Tulane coach Jon Sumrall will be heading to Florida and Ole Miss defensive coordinator Pete Golding was promoted to the head coaching role following Kiffin's departure.

Washington Huskies fans are no strangers to coaches moving on to other locations.

Following the Huskies' run to the 2024 College Football Playoff national championship game, former Steward Kalen DeBoer was hired by Alabama, which is competing in this year's College Football Playoff.

After DeBoer's departure, Washington benefited from another coach leaving a program he rebuilt, Jedd Fisch.

Fisch guided the Huskies to a 6-7 record in his first year as a head coach in the Pacific Northwest in 2024-25 and improved the team's record to 9-4 this past season.

Before Washington's series finale, a 38-10 win against the Boise State Broncos in the Los Angeles Bowl on Dec. 13, it was rumored Fisch was up for the open head coach job with the Michigan Wolverines.

There's been several rumors and reports over the last several weeks claiming Michigan had Fisch on its shortlist of coaching candidates and reached out to him.

A recent report from Dave "Softy" Mahler of KJR 93.3 in Seattle on "X" said that, per a source "close to Fisch," that the second-year coach "isn't going anywhere."

The report went on to say Fisch hasn't and won't interview for the Wolverines job.

Mahler's report came on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24). It came hours after ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel identified Fisch as one of three main targets for Michigan and someone the program considers a "gettable" coach.

Fisch was also one of the few names mentioned as a candidate for the open Florida job before Sumrall was ultimately hired.

Fisch had experience with the Gators. He graduated from Florida and began his coaching career there as a graduate assistant, leading to a lot of the speculation.

Similarly to the Gators, Fisch has experience with the Wolverines. He served as the team's quarterbacks and wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator for two years under former head coach Jim Harbaugh from 2015-16.

Fisch has garnered a reputation as a program rebuilder. On top of his three-win improvement from Year 1 to Year 2 in the PNW, Fisch recently pulled in a 2026 recruiting class that ranks 12th in the country, per 247Sports. It's the highest-ranked recruiting class for the Huskies in program history.
