The Huskies will be trying to build a new hierarchy in the backfield this season

Washington head coach Jedd Fisch speaks to the media during a news conference Monday at Husky Stadium in Seattle.

SEATTLE — The Washington Huskies football team begins spring practice today at 3:30 p.m. PT on Tuesday and there will be a lot of players looking to take advantage of the early opportunities.

The Huskies' leading rusher and receiver from a season ago, running back Jonah Coleman and wide receiver Denzel Boston, and their starting cornerbacks from 2025-26, Tacario Davis and Ephesians Prysock, all entered the 2026 NFL Draft.

In addition to Coleman, Washington's heir apparent to the former senior, sophomore Adam Mohammed, left the team in the transfer portal to join Cal.

This spring and summer will determine who begins the season with the reps vacated by Coleman and Mohammed's departures. But the spring will be younger backs' time to shine.

The Huskies' two acquisitions in the transfer portal, Jayden Limar (Oregon) and Trey Cooley), will not participate in the spring schedule.

"The biggest thing for us is Brian Bonner, we have no film on other than high school," Washington coach Jedd Fisch said in a news conference Monday. "Ansu Sanoe, no film on other than high school. Jordan Washington did not have much practice in the fall. He had different injuries that he dealt with towards the end of the last four weeks of the season.

"Quaid Carr, he didn't have spring football a year ago. ... Having spring football will make a big difference in giving him this opportunity. Julian McMahan was injured or dinged up most of the fall last year. So gives him an opportunity to compete. ... We should have eight guys available all spring. ... We're gonna let those guys compete."

The aforementioned players, plus redshirt freshman running back Ryken Moon and redshirt freshman cornerback-to-running back D'Aryhian Clemons will all enter this spring with varying levels of experience. However, it seems like it will be a clean slate based on the comments from Fisch.

Washington and Carr are the two running backs with the most recent and significant playing time among the crop of players.

Despite his injuries, Washington finished 2025 with 27 carries for 233 yards and a touchdown. Moon and Carr both received minimal reps last season in order to preserve their redshirts.

Bonner and Sanoe will also enter this season with varying expectations. Bonner is a four-star recruit and ranked as the 128th-best player in the Class of 2026 according to 247Sports. Sanoe is a three-star recruit in the same class.

Clemons spent '25 as a defensive back after being recruited as a three-star safety. He spent significant time as a running back in high school. According to Fisch, the Huskies had more film on him in the back field than at cornerback.

Despite the different profiles of the tailbacks, there is a common trait among them that will make the spring competition interesting to watch.

"The central theme of our program is competition," Running backs coach Scottie Graham said Monday. "I want to see them compete and who comes out on top. ... They're very fast. We could probably win the (4x100 NCAA championship) with our running back room. Jordan runs a (10.2-second 100 meter), Brian Bonner runs 10.4 and Quaid runs 10.5. They're moving. They're different. But one of them will step up just like Jonah stepped up in the past."
