The Washington Huskies men's basketball team has spent the majority of the offseason trying to re-tool the roster for the 2026-27 season.

While the Huskies have been focused on adding players to the program, they also saw a departure from the coaching staff.

Former special assistant to the head coach Jerry Hobbie left Washington to take a job as an assistant with the TCU Horned Frogs men's basketball team. Hobbie was with the Huskies for nine seasons, with both former head coach Mike Hopkins and current head coach Danny Sprinkle.

Hobbie grew a great reputation over his three decades as a coach, including on the recruiting side of things and working on shooting with players.

Sprinkle and Washington reportedly found a person to fill the vacant spot on the coaching staff left by Hobbie.

According to a post on "X" from CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, UW will be hiring DeAndre Haynes as an assistant head coach.

Haynes will be joining the Huskies after a five-season stint with the Marquette Golden Eagles from 2021-26.

While Haynes coached at Marquette, the program made the NCAA tournament four times and the Sweet Sixteen once (2024). The Golden Eagles won the Big East tournament and regular season title one time each during Haynes' tenure (2023).

The former Kent State point guard (2002-06) also served as an assistant with his alma mater (2012-16), Toledo (2016-17), Michigan (2017-19) and Maryland (2019-21).

Including his time with the Golden Eagles, Haynes has made the NCAA tournament eight times as an assistant coach. The only team he coached for that didn't make March Madness was Toledo, which last appeared in the dance in 1980.

While he was on the coaching staff, Michigan won the Big Ten postseason tournament in 2018. Maryland was the regular season champions while he was on the staff in 2020.

During Haynes' tenure with the Golden Eagles, he helped coach several All-American selections, including Kam Jones in the 2024-25 season. Jones was selected in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs and subsequently traded to the Indiana Pacers. He played 37 games (seven starts) with Indiana this past season.

Sprinkle and the Huskies will hope that Haynes' success in the Big Ten will translate to the team this upcoming season. In Sprinkle's first two seasons as a head coach, which have also been Washington's first two years in the Big Ten, the program finished 18th and 12th in the 18-team conference, respectively.
