Washington MBB Unable to Land Top 2026 Recruit cover image

Dylan Mingo opted to commit to North Carolina over the Huskies, Penn State and Baylor

The Washington Huskies basketball team will have to wait a little longer for their first commit of the 2026 recruiting class.

One of the Huskies' biggest targets of the '26 class, combo guard Dylan Mingo, announced his commitment on ESPN's First Take on Tuesday.

Amidst a final four of Washington, the North Carolina Tar Heels, Penn State Nittany Lions and Baylor Bears, Mingo chose to commit to North Carolina, where he'll play under Hubert Davis.

Mingo's commitment marks the third year in a row Davis has landed a consensus top-10 player in that year's respective class.

"I chose UNC because it felt like a family environment, from the players, fans, to the coaches," Mingo said in an article written by Jeff Borzello for ESPN. "I felt like the UNC history and everyone who played there is huge. Knowing their will to win is always at the highest level. I would love to be a part of that."

Mingo is ranked as the eighth-best player, third-best combo guard and best player in New York according to 247Sports.

It's a disappointing update for Washington that it wasn't able to land Mingo but not entirely unexpected.

Over the last several months, Mingo was linked to Penn State due to his brother, Kayden Mingo, playing with the Nittany Lions. Mingo was also predicted to land to Baylor according to 247Sports' Crystal Ball but had it changed to North Carolina several weeks ago.

The Huskies are still yet to land a commitment from a player in the class of '26. They have offers out for several notable players, including the top overall player in the nation, Tyran Stokes, five-star point guard Brandon McCoy and five-star small forward Bruce Branch III.

Despite the current state of Washington's '26 class, there's reason to expect the Huskies will put together a solid list of incoming players in the next several months.

Since current head coach Danny Sprinkle was hired in '24, UW has landed notable players including current sophomore Zoom Diallo (class of '24 four-star) and freshmen JJ Mandaquit, Jasir Rencher and Hannes Steinbach (all four-stars).

Washington has also been one of the more active programs in the transfer portal, landing sophomore forward Bryson Tucker and sophomore guard Wesley Yates III.

The Huskies are currently 13-13 and 5-10 in Big Ten play. It's still unclear how many players will opt to return to the program in the '26-27 season.
