The Washington Huskies men's basketball team earned a much-needed nine day reprieve following a 99-93 double-overtime win against the Southern University Jaguars on Nov. 18.
The Huskies entered that game dealing with several injuries to freshman forward Hannes Steinbach and sophomore forward Bryson Tucker. Both were out with respective ankle sprains.
Senior guard Desmond Claude made his season debut against Southern U after missing the first four games of the season due to his own ankle sprain.
Claude entered the game against the Jaguars under a minute restriction that he had to play past due to the aforementioned injuries and players fouling out across the 50 minutes of playing time.
The team had a nine-day rest between the game against Southern U and the first game of the Acrisure Holiday Classic against Nevada, which is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. PT on Nov. 27 in Palm Desert, Calif. Washington was looking forward to getting a reprieve and hopefully getting players back in the fold.
Instead, another ankle sprain is hindering an addition Huskies player.
Sophomore center Lathan Sommerville rolled his ankle in practice over the weekend and suffered an ankle sprain, leaving Washington with three players, including Sommerville, Steinbach and Tucker, questionable for the game against Nevada. All three players are day-to-day, according to a report from Andrew Bailie of Cascadia Sports.
On Monday, head coach Danny Sprinkle jokingly called his team the "sprained ankle capital of the world," according to a report from Chris Fetters of Dawgman.com.
If all three players miss the game against Nevada, it would leave the Huskies with a thin bench and just two designated frontcourt players: graduate center Franck Kepnang and freshman forward Jasir Rencher.
Washington currently stands at 4-1 this season. If the injuries extend through the Acrisure Holiday classic, the Huskies will have to go with a mostly small-ball lineup against Nevada on Nov. 27 and Colorado on Nov. 28.
Sprinkle expressed confidence in his guards' ability to manage the offense with the trio of forwards out.
According to Fetters' story, when Sprinkle was asked about what guards he feels most comfortable in running the offense, he said "All of 'em."
After the Acrisure Holiday Classic, the Huskies will play its first Big Ten game of the season against UCLA at 8 p.m. PT on Dec. 3 at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.
