The assumptive starter for the Huskies in the backfield was driven away from Husky Stadium in an ambulance for precautionary tests but was responsive

Story has been updated at 5:22 p.m. PT to include an update from Washington on his personal "X" account.

SEATTLE — The Washington Huskies football team had their first padded practice on Saturday at Husky Stadium in Seattle.

Huskies players and coaches were eager to get to hitting in the lead up to Saturday's practice. The excitement dissipated after practice was cut a half-hour early due to a scary situation.

Washington redshirt sophomore running back Jordan Washington was taken away from Husky Stadium in an ambulance at the end of practice.

According to an update from a UW spokesperson, Washington was conscious, responsive, talking with the medical staff and moving all his extremities before the ambulance arrived. He was taken in the ambulance due to precautionary reasons and will undergo further tests.

There was no specification if Washington's ailment was concussion protocol, head-and-neck concerns or both.

Washington's injury happened on an interception return. Senior cornerback and transfer portal acquisition Emmanuel Karnley picked off a pass intended for redshirt junior receiver Rashid Williams.

The Virginia transfer stiff-armed Washington, who attempted to make a tackle on the return.

Washington was quickly checked by medical and training staff after the play. Practice ended soon after and teammates came over to check on the redshirt sophomore.

The team had a collective prayer after practice ended 30 minutes earlier than the scheduled 2 p.m. PT finish.

Outside of Demond Williams (611 rushing yards), Washington had the most rushing yards from last season among returning running backs this spring. UW's top two backs from last season, Jonah Coleman (NFL Draft) and Adam Mohammed (transfer to Cal), didn't return.

Washington finished his redshirt freshman season with 27 carries for 233 yards and a touchdown.

Coleman and Mohammed's departures, plus the spring absences of veteran transfer portal additions Trey Cooley (Troy — knee surgery) and Jayden Limar (Oregon — ankle surgery), has led to Washington being the presumptive starter in the backfield. He received several hand-offs in seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 drills before exiting Saturday's practice.

It's a good sign that Washington was responsive, attentive and moving his extremities. But it wouldn't be a shock, given the fact it's early in spring, to see him get a break even if the injury is minor.

Washington shared an update via his personal "X" account, saying he's "all good."

If Washington misses practice time, redshirt freshman Quaid Carr Jr. and four-star Class of 2026 recruit and true freshman Brian Bonner Jr. would likely get the first-team reps.

The Huskies will practice again Tuesday and will know more about Washington's condition by then.
