University of Washington running back Adam Mohammed, who recently put his name in the transfer portal, is taking a somewhat surprising visit to California on Friday, according to reports.
Washington RB Adam Mohammed is visiting Cal today, a source tells @BrandonHuffman. He's ranked as the No. 5 overall back in the 247Sports Portal Rankings.
A current sophomore, Mohammad played in 13 games this season for the Huskies, who went 9-4 and won the LA Bowl. He also earned two starts, amassing 523 yards and five rushing touchdowns. He also had 138 receiving yards on 17 catches.
Mohammed helped fill in for the injured Jonah Coleman this season, and he picked up a season-high 108 yards against UCLA and 105 against Oregon in a late-season loss.
Look, in modern day college football, players transfer all the time, and they transfer for any number of reasons. Any speculation as to why Mohammed is transferring is just that, but visiting Cal is surprising for a number of reasons.
1) Coleman is graduating from Washington, and with that, Mohammed figured to have the inside track at Washington as the No. 1 back in 2026.
2) Washington is a better program than Cal, both presently and historically. The Huskies went 9-4 this season while Cal went 7-6 - and fired its head coach.
3) Washington is in a better conference, as the Big Ten is more highly-regarded than the ACC. With that, the Huskies have opportunities for better bowl games - and they have more opportunities at the college football playoff.
4) Because Washington is a better program, it presumably has more NIL money available than Cal does.
5) Mohammed is from Arizona, so there's only minimal geographic benefit to leaving Washington for Cal.
MORE HUSKIES STORIES:
It's always possible that Mohammed is trying to get more NIL money out of Washington, and this is his opportunity at creating more leverage.
It's also possible that he may have thought head coach Jedd Fisch was going to leave, and the portal was his way to protect himself.
But again, those are just speculative things. For now, the Huskies face the realization they'll need a new backfield leader in 2026.
The University of Washington women's basketball team defeated No. 6 Michigan on Thursday, marking the first win over a Top-Ten team for the Huskies since they joined the Big Ten ahead of last season. Washington is 12-2 on the campaign.
