Huskies head coach Jedd Fisch will remain the primary offensive play caller

The Washington Huskies football team's offense is expected to be one of the better units in the Big Ten this upcoming season.

The Huskies, led by quarterback Demond Williams Jr., have been expected to take a step forward in the team's third year under head coach Jedd Fisch.

Fisch took the job at Washington ahead of the 2024 season coming off a successful rebuild with the Arizona Wildcats. Fisch turned Arizona around from a 1-11 record in his first season in 2021 to a 10-3 record and an Alamo Bowl win his final year with the Wildcats in 2023.

Fisch has followed a similar trajectory with the Huskies. He helped lead the team to a 6-7 record his first year in '24 and a 9-4 record in '25.

One member of Fisch's coaching staff that has been with him every step of the way with Arizona and Washington was Jimmie Dougherty.

Dougherty was the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Fisch for four seasons from '21-24 with the Huskies and Wildcats. He was promoted to the offensive coordinator role last season.

Dougherty, who's had NFL job offers dating back to last year, parted ways with Washington this offseason.

There was some expectation that JP Losman, an offensive quality control coach with the Huskies last year, could be due for a promotion and become the program's OC.

There were also words that former New York Jets offensive assistant Matt Cavanaugh could be hired as the offensive coordinator.

Despite having an OC on his coaching staff in his last five seasons as a head coach, Fisch has maintained play-calling duties on offense in addition to head coach duties.

Losman has been promoted to the quarterbacks coach. However, according to comments made by Fisch in a recent appearance on the Andy & Ari podcast from On3 Sports, it looks like the OC position will remain vacant while the sixth-year coach will continue to call plays.

"I am not looking for an offensive coordinator," Fisch said on the podcast. "We've promoted JP Losman to be our quarterback coach. That will take care of our 10th spot (on the coaching staff) there. I've run the offense the last six years. I'll continue to do that, I'll continue to call the plays. We're gonna bring in a senior assistant that could help with some of the roles of game planning. I wanted to bring someone in with some new ideas, someone who has not been a part of our program. Someone that can come in with some uniqueness to it. So, I'm still working through that part."

Fisch's statements about wanting to bring someone in with different ideas could leave a window open for Cavanaugh to join the staff.

Losman, who has NFL experience as a former quarterback in his own right, will be looking to help Williams take the next step forward in the latter's second full season as a quarterback.
