The Washington Huskies football team are coming off their second consecutive Big Ten win against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights this past Friday.
The Huskies prevailed 38-19 against the Scarlet Knights, and improved to 5-1 on the season (2-1 in the Big Ten) in the process.
Similar to Washington's win against Maryland, where the former scored 24 unanswered points in a 24-20 win, the Huskies started the game behind before coming back with a second-half surge.
Washington trailed Rutgers 13-0 in the second quarter. It scored 10 points in the second quarter and went into halftime trailing 13-10. The Huskies kept the momentum going and outscored the Scarlet Knights 28-6 in the second half for the final score.
Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr. was arguably the biggest component to the team's comeback.
The sophomore signal caller finished the game 21-for-27 for 402 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball 13 times for 136 yards and another two touchdowns. Three of his scores, including both his rushing touchdowns, came in the fourth quarter.
Williams' 538 yards of total offense was the most in a single game in program history, passing the previous record of 529 yards set by Michael Penix Jr. in 2022. Penix set the previous record against current Huskies' coach Jedd Fisch's old team, Arizona.
Williams also became just the 16th quarterback in Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) history to have ate least 400 passing yards and 100 rushing yards in a single game.
Williams, in his first full year as a starting quarterback, has already proven himself as one of the better quarterbacks in the Big Ten.
This season, Williams has completed 74.1% of his passes for 1,628 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception. He's carried the ball 74 times for 382 yards and four touchdowns.
Williams' 85.9 quarterback rating (QBR) ranks third in the conference, his passing yards rank second in the Big Ten and his passing touchdowns is eighth in the 18-team conference.
Williams already has a Big Ten Player of the Week honor under his belt for his showing in Washington's 59-24 win against Washington State on Sept. 20, and could be well on his way to earning the honor again.
Williams performance could also help the Huskies earn their first placement on the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 poll. Washington didn't place but received votes in the last poll. The latest rankings come out Sunday.
Williams and the Huskies will next be in action against No. 15 Michigan at 9 a.m. PT on Oct. 18 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.
