The Miami Dolphins have seemingly started to commit to their rebuilding process as they had a flurry of roster moves that they announced on Monday. It was first reported that the team was cutting ties with veteran pass rusher Bradley Chubb, as they informed him of his impending release. It’s not clear whether it will be an immediate transaction, one that will be after the March 11 start of the league year, or one that will be designated as a post-June 1 transaction.
But the bigger news that followed was that the Dolphins are releasing eight time Pro-Bowler wide receiver Tyreek Hill, headlining a trio of releases that will be effectively immediately of Hill, offensive lineman James Daniels and wide receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine.
By making the move now, Miami avoids an $11 million guarantee that would be triggered next month. It also alleviates $36 million off the team’s books for 2026. These moves all certainly help save on the cap, which is a necessity for a team in a rebuild. It also shows that they’re fully committing to a new era and direction under first-year general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan.
Here is the full story from Dolphins Roundtable writer James Brizuela on the flurry of moves.
Miami originally gave up quite a haul to acquire Hill in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, sending a first-round pick, second-round pick, two fourth-round picks and a sixth-round pick back in 2022. The Dolphins then signed him to a four-year, $120 million extension, of which they certainly got their money’s worth in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. 2024 and thereafter, not as much.
It won’t be the first major cut in this rebuild, but the one whose future everyone is closely watching is still not clear yet in quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
