The Baltimore Ravens hired their replacement to John Harbaugh, ironically enough, from his brother’s coaching staff, and who has ties to the fired coach he’s taking the reins from. The Ravens announced on Thursday that they’ve officially hired Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter as their new head coach, and have signed him to a five-year deal, according to ESPN. Minter has been Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator for four seasons, coming over to the NFL on the Chargers' staff with him from the Michigan Wolverines. However, before he joined Jim Harbaugh in Michigan, he was on the staff in Baltimore. Minter’s first NFL job was as a defensive assistant for the Ravens from 2017 to 2020 under John Harbaugh.
Minter was thought to be the front runner for the role and was seen as a prominent, fast-rising young star with potential for a head coaching role. He was interviewed by nearly every team with a vacancy. Minter will be the franchise’s fourth head coach in their 31-year history, and their youngest at that at 42 years old. He will now be tasked with finding the right offensive coordinator to elevate the offense and maximize quarterback Lamar Jackon’s skillset.
Here is the full story from Ravens Roundtable writer James Brizuela on the new hire for the franchise and what to expect out of the dynamic, young Minter.
Minter will be tasked with getting Baltimore over the hump of underperforming in the playoffs and will look to do so behind a stout defense as the first coach for the franchise to come from that side of the ball. He led Los Angeles to the fifth-best defense in the NFL in 2025, and helped them lead the league with the fewest points allowed per game in his first season. Having the background of his four years in Baltimore will be crucial to understanding and strengthening the culture as he leads the team into their next era.
