Ben Johnson’s outside zone scheme dismantled the Philadelphia Eagles on Black Friday. Go inside the film to see how Cole Kmet’s pivotal block created a massive seam for Bears running back D'Andre Swift.

Watching Ben Johnson's offense throughout the 2025 Chicago Bears season taught me something about offensive football.

There is nothing better than a perfectly executed run play.

The Bears had many of those types of plays last season, but D'Andre Swift's 23-yard gain against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on Black Friday stands out above the rest.

Using Bobby Peters' "The 2025 Chicago Bears Complete Offensive Manual," let's break down Swift's explosive run in the 24-15 victory over the Eagles in Week 13.

On the Bears' second offensive drive of the game, Chicago's offense faced a second-and-5 from the Eagles' 45-yard line. The Bears lined up in 11 personnel, with a bunch set to the left of the formation. Swift lined up eight yards behind Caleb Williams.

Before the snap, Cole Kmet motioned from the bunch side of the formation and inserts to block the defensive tackle, which gave Swift just enough space to gash the Eagles' defense for a 23-yard gain. Swift finished the 11-play drive with a 3-yard touchdown.

According to Peters, Johnson called an outside zone slice, which has all the benefits of "running Outside Zone, with the creation of a new gap on the backside with horizontal displacement."

Once Eagles safety Reed Blankenship saw Kmet motion on the play, the Eagles' defender rotated down for run support, but the Bears' tight end executed a "Bam" block.

"Instead of slicing the defensive end, he slices the defensive tackle on his back-and-forth escort motion," Peters wrote. "This creates a vertical seam in the Eagles' two high defense."

Left guard Joe Thuney worked his way up to the mike linebacker and placed his body between him and Swift. Former Bears center Drew Dalman combo blocked with right guard Jonah Jackson on the nose tackle and then worked up to the weak side linebacker. Right tackle Darnell Wright took care of the defensive end, and Swift fought through two arm tackles before making a cutback on the defensive back to gain additional yardage.

The Bears finished the game with 281 rushing yards. Kyle Monangai led the way with 130 yards and one rushing touchdown on 22 carries, while Swift added another 125 yards and a score on 18 attempts.

Chicago finished with the third-most rushing yards (2,456) in the NFL for a reason. Johnson demands perfection from his unit, and when his team executes liked they did on Swift's 23-yard run, it's marvelous to watch.
