Chicago Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent takes ownership of his performance against the Green Bay Packers in the 31-7 loss at Lambeau Field. The question now becomes who starts at quarterback in Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons.
Bears and Packers fans have had the Week 5 game at Lambeau Field circled since last season's wild-card game.
Everyone knows how the Bears erased a 21-3 deficit at halftime to end Green Bay's season. Bears head coach Ben Johnson cursed out the Packers in the postgame locker room and gave head coach Matt LaFleur a brief handshake.
To add to the emotions going into this matchup, Bears legendary head coach Mike Ditka passed away on Friday. The Bears needed to go into Lambeau Field with an edge, knowing they were going to get the Packers' best shot.
That didn't happen in all three phases, resulting in the Chicago Bears being embarrassed, 31-7. Quarterback Tyson Bagent didn't provide any answers for Johnson's offense, failing to meet the magnitude of the latest game in this historic rivalry.
Bagent finished 12 of 21 for 87 passing yards and was intercepted twice. He averaged 4.1 yards per pass. Both interceptions occurred in the middle of the field, and safety Xavier McKinney made the Bears' quarterback pay for his ill-advised mistakes.
After the second McKinney interception, Johnson made a quarterback change, sending in 38-year-old quarterback Case Keenum.
"Yeah, we just wanted a little spark there," Johnson said. "Tyson, just could never feel like he got in a rhythm here today, so we'll look at why that was the case, and the second interception happened and we just felt like let's give Case a chance out there and see if we get different results."
Keenum didn't.
With the Bears down 31-7 at the start of the fourth quarter, the veteran quarterback was intercepted trying to target wide receiver Rome Odunze on fourth-and-goal from the Packers 9-yard line.
The Bears fumbled on their next two offensive possessions -- one from wide receiver Rome Odunze and Keenum.
Bagent was looking forward to this opportunity to start against the Packers, knowing this wasn't just another game. He took accountability for the offense's struggles.
"Obviously super disappointed, but really can't look any further than the mirror," Bagent said after the game. "Got to get better. Got to take it face on, see where I need to get better, see where we need to get better as a team. But, yeah, definitely wanted to get this one, and it really, starting with me, just didn't really go our way."
On the Bears' first offensive possession of the game, Bagent lost his footing -- and so did many other players throughout the game -- resulting in a sack that lost eight yards. Bears couldn't recover from the lost yards and were forced to punt.
After an incompletion to tight end Cole Kmet, Bagent threw a pass intended for wide receiver Luther Burden III. Except there were two Packers in the area, leading to the first of five turnovers on the day.
Bagent told the media after the game that he didn't have a conversation with Johnson before he benched. Quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett told Bagent Keenum was going in, and Bagent's mindset turned to how he could support his fellow teammate.
The Bears are now 3-2 on the season and will go on the road to face the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6. Caleb Williams did a throwing session before Sunday's game, and Johnson was asked about Williams' availability for next week.
“He’s on track," Johnson said. "We’ll see if that’s Atlanta or after. I think it’s going to be close.”
If Williams can't go, the Bears will recap this game, talk as a staff and make a decision on who will be the quarterback next Sunday. Regardless of what ends up happening in the Bears quarterback room, Bagent has to accept how he played against the Packers and flush this performance.
"Yeah, you know we’ve got to go, we’ve got to look at the tape tomorrow as a unit, as a team," Bagent said. "And then after that, it's really just a goldfish mentality, short-term memory, because we got a good Atlanta team that we got to go beat next Sunday."
