Austin Booker shines as Coby Bryant’s significant knee injury shifts the defensive spotlight, forcing a reshuffled secondary to step up during the Bears' first padded session of training camp.

Coby Bryant's knee injury will dominate the headlines for the Chicago Bears' first fully padded training camp practice on Monday at Halas Hall.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Bryant "is expected to be sidelined 8-10 weeks due to a hyperextended knee, bone bruise and small fracture that he suffered at today’s practice, per sources. No surgery is expected to be needed."

At least Bryant won't require surgery, but the secondary will have to adjust without one of its leaders until the veteran can return to the field. Versatile defensive back Cam Lewis played with the first-team defense opposite of Dillon Thieneman.

Lewis orginially filled in at the nickel cornerback spot for Kyler Gordon, who is currently on the physically unable to perform list with a soft-tissue injury.

Outside of secondary injuries, there was plenty of takeaways from Monday's practice. Here is everything you need to know.

1 on 1s

  • With the pads finally on, I wanted to focus my attention on some of the offensive and defensive line battles. Austin Booker put together some really good reps throughout the practice. The Bears' defensive end used a good arm strike to knock Braxton Jones off balance and to the ground. The veteran left tackle bounced back and kept Booker from getting to the position coach acting as the quarterback. Booker won both of his reps convincingly against Kiran Amegadjie later in the practice, showing good bend on one rep to get around the edge and then winning with an inside move on the following rep.
  • Gervon Dexter Sr. showed some good power and pad level against Jonah Jackson, winning the rep with ease.
  • Luther Burden III ran a vertical route against Tyrique Stevenson. The second-year receiver came down with the football despite Stevenson being draped all over him. Burden spun the ball on ground after making the catch. Dallis Flowers forced an incomplete pass while covering Burden on a vertical route.
  • Kalif Raymond ran a double move against Jaylon Johnson, forcing the veteran cornerback to hesistate, which allowed the savy receiver to create separation for a big completion down field.

Team Period

  • The Bears had some miscues presnap during 11 on 11s. Several times throughout the practice, Williams and the first-team offense were forced to re-huddle because of some kind of mistake.
  • Devin Bush tipped one of Williams' passes that was intended to go to a receiver in the middle of the field.
  • Williams made a completion to Rome Odunze over the middle of the field on third down to give the Bears a new set of downs.
  • Colston Loveland had one of the biggest plays during the team period, catching a pass on the right side of the field and then creating some yards after the catch for the Bears' offense.
  • Braxton Jones received nearly all the reps with the first-team offense. Kiran Amegadjie played primarily with Tyson Bagent and the 2s, while Jedrick Wills lined up as the starting left tackle with the 3s.
  • Tyson Bagent continues to connect with rookie receiver Zavion Thomas. Those two have made plays in each of the practices I've attended.
  • Running back Salvon Ahmed showed nice vision and speed to generate a big run with the second-team offense.

Additional Note

  • Kyle Monangai returned to practice after missing three days last week with a soft-tissue injury. The second-year running back participated in warmups and individual drills, but he didn't practice in 11 on 11s.
