After the Week 4 win over the Jets, the Chicago Bears will go on the road to face the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. Here is the matchup to watch, X-factor and a score prediction for the Week 5 game.
I was at Soldier Field as a fan for the Chicago Bears' wild-card game against the Green Bay Packers last season.
The atmosphere and energy going into that game were something I'll never forget. I remember the home crowd's uneasiness when the Packers led 21-3 at halftime, and the confidence of Packers fans at the time. Rome Odunze's catch on fourth down took the life out of the Green Bay fans that were around me. Then pure joy and excitement ensued when Jordan Love's final pass fell incomplete.
With the history between these two teams and former Bears Super Bowl-winning coach Mike Ditka passing on Friday, I imagine both fanbases will feel every single emotion on Sunday at Lambeau Field.
It's the greatest rivalry in sports, and not much else needs to be said.
Here's everything you need to know about this Week 5 between the Bears and Packers.
Matchup to Watch
The Packers offense has had many issues to start this season and a lot can be attributed to the offensive line. Still, Packers quarterback Jordan Love has found ways to create some explosives in the passing game. According to radar360, the Packers have 13 passing plays of 20 yards or more, tied for 11th in the NFL with five other teams.
Wide receiver Christian Watson has accounted for five of those big passing plays, tying him with George Pickens and Tre'Harris for the 11th-most in the league.
Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson has allowed an explosive passing play in three of the first four games. Here are the longest passing plays allowed by Stevenson in those matchups, according to Pro Football Focus.
- Week 1 vs Panthers: 51 yards (TD)
- Week 2 vs Vikings: 31 yards
- Week 4 vs Jets: 58 yards (TD)
The question is, can Stevenson prevent Watson from creating those chunk plays downfield? Chicago's pass rush can help out the secondary by providing pressure, but Stevenson needs to prove he can make it difficult for the Packers' top playmaker.
X-Factor
With running back Kyle Monangai out for this Week 5 matchup, Roschon Johnson is going to have a bigger role in this game.
“I was really pleased with what he looked like in camp," Ben Johnson said. "He was one of those guys that we just hadn't seen a lot of because of the injury history, and yet since he's been healthy, he runs hard. I think that showed up again last week when he got the ball in his hands, put his foot in the ground and got north and south right away. Bigger body than the other guys in that room. I think he's a complete back. He can run hard in between the tackles. I think he's got enough speed to get to the perimeter. He catches the ball well out of the backfield, and then because of his size, I think he's an asset in pass protection as well. He can do a little bit of everything, which we really value at that spot.”
That's a lot of praise for the Bears' third running back on the team. The Bears are going to need him to produce when D'Andre Swift gets a breather during the game. If Roschon keeps Chicago's offense moving in a positive direction when he gets his snaps, that will keep the Bears' playbook open, giving Ben Johnson plenty of options to attack this Packers defense.
Game Prediction
Even with Tyson Bagent starting, the Bears' down their top left tackle and Monangai out, the Bears are still favored over the Packers at Lambeau Field (-1.5). That's extremely telling and the first time that's happened since Week 1 of the 2006 season.
The Packers don't have a run game. Green Bay's unit has struggled to protect quarterback Jordan Love, allowing 42 total quarterback pressures (tied for 6th most). To be fair, Chicago is 11th with 39 total quarterback pressures allowed.
The pass rush stats are similar as well.
- Chicago: 10 sacks and 39 QB Pressures
- Green Bay: 10 sacks and 36 QB Pressures
The biggest differentiator in this game is the Bears' ability to run the football. No Monangai hurts. Nobody will question that, but the Packers don't have anyone right now that can provide a spark on the ground.
I believe the Bears will control the clock, limiting opportunities for Love, and leave Lambeau Field with a 27-23 victory.
