The Chicago Bears will play their first game at Soldier Field on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Here is the matchup to watch, an X-factor and a score prediction for the Week 2 game.
This Chicago Bears coaching staff is done talking about the 59-37 Week 1 win against the Carolina Panthers.
Head coach Ben Johnson addressed questions Friday regarding whether he has held back his offense's full capabilities.
"You’re still talking about last week, aren’t you?" Johnson said.
When defensive coordinator Dennis Allen was asked about rookie defensive back Malik Muhammad's interception on Thursday, he responded in a similar way as Johnson.
"You’re going to keep asking about last week, aren’t you?" Allen said.
The Bears secured a victory and that's what counts. How the team necessarily played isn't the main focus because the Bears understand the team made mistakes on all three phases and are looking to improve those miscues each week.
"You've heard a couple of those guys in the locker room talk about that should be our worst game that we played, Week 1," Johnson said. "We should continue to get better from here on out so that we're playing our best football in December and January. That's our sole mission in life right now. We've had two really good days of practice. We need another good one here today. And we're looking to try to compete with a really good team here and get a W at home."
The Bears will have to play a cleaner game all around if they want to come away with a victory against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at Soldier Field.
Here is the matchup to watch, an X-Factor and my game prediction.
Matchup to Watch
It's tough to single out one player on this Vikings defense because the collective unit presents plenty of problems for any offense. One player who has been discussed throughout the week is defensive lineman Jalen Redmond.
"Redmond, for them; I think he's one of the better defensive linemen in this league," Johnson said. "He's flying under the radar and yet just seeing his growth over the years; he's a force to be reckoned with. They got some young bucks inside that'll be very difficult to handle, very talented young guys, but Redmond’s a guy that we have highlighted. We run it right, but we like to complement that as much to the left as we can.”
Offensive coordinator Press Taylor echoed Johnson's words about the impact Redmond makes for the Vikings' defense. The 6-foot-2, 291-pound defensive lineman also has the versatility to line up all across the defensive line. Redmond ended with two quarterback pressures in the win over the Packers in Week 1.
Bears center Garrett Bradbury didn't have the most consistent game against the Panthers. He allowed two quarterback pressures, and Carolina's defensive tackles had some strong reps against the veteran offensive lineman, including rookie Lee Hunter.
Redmond is just one of the many issues Bradbury will face on Sunday against the blitz-happy Vikings defense.
X-Factor
Speaking of the blitz, Caleb Williams' preparation against pressure is the X-factor in this game. The Bears quarterback called Flores' defense a "mental war," with all the different looks he will throw at an offense.
Williams will have to process quickly and identify answers to the exotic blitz looks he will face on Sunday. Packers quarterback Jordan Love threw an interception and lost a fumble in the 39-22 loss to the Vikings.
For the Bears to come away with a win, Williams must protect the protect the football and strategically attack Flores' defense when he is blitzed. Williams finished with the second-highest NFL passer rating under pressure (133.3) in Week 1. Only Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback was better with a 135.4 quarterback rating under pressure.
Game Prediction
The Bears and Vikings split the two matchups last year. Minnesota won 27-24 in Week 1, and Chicago came away with a 19-17 victory in Week 11.
Even though the Vikings have a complicated defense, I believe the Bears will still put up some points in this latest installment of Johnson vs. Floes. Williams is the difference maker in this one with his ability to create big plays.
Bears win 27-23.
