The Chicago Bears have cap casualties to deal with, like every NFL team, this offseason.
Kevin Byard, Jaquan Brisker, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Andrew Billings, Nahshon Wright, Jonathan Owens, Braxton Jones, and others are set to become free agents.
There have even been players like D.J. Moore, who still have a few years left on their contracts but have been discussed as trade pieces to save the team money. Moore is set to hit the free agent market in the 2030 season.
D'Andre Swift is another one of those players who could be traded before his deal runs out with Chicago. If the Bears decide to release Swift before June 1, it would save them $7.47 million.
Swift is on a three-year, $24 million deal with the Bears, according to Spotrac. He'll become an unrestricted free agent in 2027.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times' Jason Lieser, the veteran running back hopes to stay in Chicago and doesn't want to play anywhere else in the NFL.
"I have no idea, but hopefully I did enough for them to want me back because I know I don't want to go anywhere else," Swift said. "I hope it plays itself out that way. I love the city, I love the coaching staff, and the men that I work with. That's out of my control, but if I had it my way, I'd be back. I don't want to play nowhere else."
Swift has been in the NFL since 2020 after being drafted out of Georgia. He started his NFL career with the Detroit Lions. He played there for three seasons before joining the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023.
Swift reached the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career with the Eagles in 2023. He didn't get a new deal from Philadelphia and signed with the Bears, and has been in Chicago ever since.
This past season, Swift went over 1,000 yards again and was part of the dynamic backfield duo with rookie Kyle Monangai.
Swift just turned 27 in January and is still producing at a high level. His projected market value is currently at $8.8 million. The Bears will have some big-time decisions to make with other upcoming free agents for the 2026 offseason.
Wright saw the most growth, going from $1.1 million to a projected $16.7 million. Brisker's value has now grown to $10 million since he signed his rookie contract.
If the Bears do want to re-sign some of those players, a serious conversation about Swift's contract may be needed.
