Former Bears Head Coach Might Get Another Chance cover image

A familiar face from Chicago's past is reportedly on the radar for a new head coaching opportunity in the NFL's turbulent offseason.

An assistant coach with ties to the Chicago Bears could be getting another shot at a head coaching gig in the NFL.

The infamous "Black Monday" in the NFL is finally here. It's the day when organizations decide to let go of their underperforming head coaches. The Cleveland Browns parted ways with Kevin Stefanski, and the Las Vegas Raiders fired Pete Carroll after one season.

Arizona Cardinals head coach and former Philadelphia Eagles assistant Jonathan Gannon joined them after being fired following his third season. The Atlanta Falcons fired head coach Raheem Morris on Sunday night.

Head coaching openings now include the New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, Browns, Raiders, Falcons and Cardinals.

The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported Monday that the Titans were already interviewing various candidates for their vacancy. The Titans fired Brian Callahan this season after a 1-5 start. He went 4-19 in two seasons with Tennessee.

Tennessee has requested interviews with Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.

Matt Nagy is a familiar name to Bears fans, as he served as the team's head coach from 2018-2021.

His time with the Bears had some highs and lows. His first year in 2018, things got off to a great start. That season was actually the last time that the Bears led the NFC North after Week 11

The Bears finished the regular season at 12-4 and faced the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card. However, the "double doink" gave the Bears a first-round exit.

Nagy then went 8-8 in 2019 and 2020, before finishing 6-11 in 2021 and being fired by the organization. Nagy has been the Chiefs' OC for the last three seasons.

Unlike Kansas City, Chicago is heading to the postseason. The Chiefs finished the regular season at 6-11 and aren't going to the playoffs for the first time since 2014 under head coach Andy Reid.

Things got bad for the Chiefs in Week 15, when they lost to the Los Angeles Chargers. The team also lost star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who suffered a torn ACL and LCL in the defeat. Kansas City then lost its last three games of the regular season.

The Bears will be taking on the Green Bay Packers for the third time this season. Chicago lost 19-16 to the Detroit Lions, but held onto the No. 2 seed in the NFC after the Philadelphia Eagles lost 24-17 to the Washington Commanders.

Kickoff for round three of the Bears and Packers is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. CT on Prime Video. Local Chicago viewers can also tune in courtesy of Fox 32.
