A blowout at Lambeau left the Windy City reeling, but insider Brad Biggs reveals why a wide-open NFC North and Caleb Williams' eventual return offer hope.
The Chicago Bears were absolutely embarrassed on Sunday by the Green Bay Packers.
For the first time in a long time, it felt like the Bears were the favored team. Even Packers radio was starting to believe it.
Ben Johnson had proved against the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets that he could win with a backup quarterback. He used Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent in those games and had dominant wins.
The difference on Sunday was that the Bears couldn't run the ball well. This made the offense one-dimensional, which isn't something you want with backups like Keenum or Bagent under center.
The Bears felt the effects of not having Caleb Williams in the lineup. The Packers took advantage and beat the Bears 31-7 at Lambeau Field in Week 5.
Fans have started to lose hope and may be lowering their expectations for what this team can do. This definitely wasn't what they expected.
Even last year, when they lost to the Packers at Lambeau Field, it was by seven points, not 24.
Bears insider Brad Biggs was on 104.3 The Score to offer hope to the fans.
He wasn't worried about the loss because, at the end of the day, these kinds of things happen in an NFL season. The NFC North is still anyone's race, and Johnson's team has responded well to these kinds of losses in the past.
Bears fans need to just take a breather and realize that there is much more to play for.
"Yeah, I think it's probably closer to the latter," Biggs said. "I don't like to get into expectations in mid-October. We could play that game almost every Sunday. Stuff like this happens every NFL season. It's how the Bears respond that will be telling. Last year, in Ben Johnson's first season, I think everyone would agree that they did a pretty good job of that bounce-back, not letting things snowball on them. I mean, my goodness, they've got a lot to fix, and the division is wide open. I mean, wide open. The Vikings are 5-0 and certainly wouldn't wanna take anything away from them. They've had some struggles offensively. Still, they've found a way to be undefeated. Everyone else is 3-2, and I think you can pick out a significant flaw with each one of those three teams.
The good news for the Bears is that Johnson went 2-for-1 without Williams in the lineup. On top of that, the team doesn't play another divisional game until Thanksgiving Day.
This team has plenty of time to correct its mistakes before its next NFC North game. Then there's the absence of Williams, which has definitely played a part.
Getting wins with Keenum and Bagent is great, but we all know that Williams adds another layer to this offense.
In reality, the Bears haven't even been at full strength, yet they still posted a winning record in their last three games.
The Bears are right where they want to be. This is still a lot left to play for. Aside from the Vikings, the Bears' remaining divisional opponents are all 3-2.
This season isn't over yet. One game won't decide the NFC North.
Don't be surprised if Johnson has his guys ready to run through a wall in the next game.
