The Chicago Bears have dealt with plenty of injuries this season to key players.
Before the regular season even started, the Bears were short at corner, as Kyler Gordon missed the first four games with a hamstring injury.
Gordon would return in Week 6, before going on the injured reserve with a calf injury ahead of Week 8. He tried to come back in Week 14 but suffered a groin injury in pregame warmups. He just came back from the IR for the Wild Card game with the Green Bay Packers.
Jaylon Johnson returned in Week 13 after dealing with a groin injury that had lingered since Week 2.
The offensive line has been fairly stable when it comes to injuries. The only issue was finding the right person to play left tackle.
Braxton Jones started the year there, before being benched for Theo Benedet. Benedet was then unable to play in Week 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers due to an injury, giving rookie Ozzy Trapilo his shot.
Also in that game, the Bears were down all three starting linebackers. D'Marco Jackson, Ruben Hyppolite and Amen Ogbongbemiga were the starters in the 31-28 win.
Trapilo did well and had been the starting left tackle the rest of the season. The Bears are going to have to shift things around again after Trapilo suffered a season-ending patellar injury versus the Packers.
Benedet played the rest of the game at left tackle, and head coach Ben Johnson was asked about how confident he was in him. Johnson knows that Benedet is capable of blocking Caleb Williams' blindside if needed.
Benedet has plenty of experience as well, playing in 16 games with 577 offensive snaps.
"Yeah, I mean, you know, we've got tackles that have played a number of snaps over the course of the season, so your comfort level does go up," Johnson said. "You know, there's a reason why Theo was out there, though. We felt really good about the ball that he was playing there in the second half of the season. So yeah, it's another one of those stories where it'll be next man up for us. We've had a number of those over the course of the year, and Theo, if it's his number that's called upon, he'll be ready to go."
The Bears have to feel good, even though losing Trapilo for the season is a heavy blow. However, having someone like Benedet, who has played a lot of snaps, has to be very comforting for Johnson.
Williams has been the third-fewest-sacked quarterback in the NFL this season, with 23 thus far. They will be tested, however, as the Rams have the seventh-most sacks (47) in the league.
Kickoff from Soldier Field will be at 5:30 p.m. CT on NBC.
