NBA legend George Gervin clashes with Bears QB Caleb Williams over the "Iceman" nickname, sparking a fiery trademark battle that ignites debate.

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has been trying to secure a trademark for his "Iceman" nickname.

The nickname stemmed from Williams' ability to lead his team in the many fourth-quarter comebacks the Bears had in 2025. No matter how much the odds were against the team, it always seemed like the quarterback had the utmost composure in the biggest moments.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported that Williams had filed multiple trademarks to sell apparel featuring a logo associated with the nickname.

However, Williams is getting pushback on the trademark from someone who has already used the nickname.

NBA Hall of Famer George Gervin refuted the claim to the "Iceman" nickname. Gervin played in the NBA from 1972-1986. Gervin was also called the Iceman during his time in professional basketball and argued that he already had the moniker.

The Hall of Famer is trying to prevent Williams from registering the nickname as a trademark.

"I've got nothing but respect for [Williams]," Gervin said. "He's already proved greatness, and his potential upside is great. Like an 'Iceman.' But that name is taken….All I'm saying is: young fella, we've already got one 'Iceman.'"

Skip Bayless, formerly of FS1's "Undisputed," weighed in on X and shared that although he is a fan of Williams, he's a bigger fan of Gervin's. He implied that the quarterback was trying to steal the nickname.

"I’m a Caleb Williams fan," Bayless said. "But I was a much bigger Iceman Gervin fan, and I’m offended Caleb and Co. are trying to steal George’s all-time great nickname. I unleash on today’s Arena Gridiron 2:30 E."

Williams responded that he isn't trying to steal anything and told Bayless that words matter. The quarterback even posted a picture of the definition of the word steal as he fired back at Bayless.

"Idc about where your fandom stands," Williams said. I was trying to give you and everyone else the benefit of the doubt. About knowing business and being smart about it. But I guess not. Foolish of me! Also, words matter, Skip Bayless. 'Steal.' Enjoy that podcast."

This trademark battle is getting interesting, to say the least.

On the one hand, Gervin had the nickname before Williams. However, Gervin hasn't played in the NBA since the late 80s. Williams enters the third year of his NFL career in 2026 and won't stop playing anytime soon.

It seems that the battle for Iceman isn't going to be over anytime soon. Things are heating up for the rights to be known by the title. Even if Williams doesn't win, Bears fans know who the real Iceman is.

Anyone can turn on the tape and figure that out for themselves.
