Returning from injury with a dominant pass-rushing tear, the Chicago nickel corner is chasing Jamal Adams’ single-season sack record to cement his place in the NFL books.
The Chicago Bears went five games without seeing Kyler Gordon on the field in 2026.
This was becoming a habit for the nickel corner, who missed most of last season with multiple injuries. He dealt with a soft-tissue injury in the offseason that kept him off the field for the first five regular-season games.
He finally debuted for the Bears in Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons in 2026. Both Gordon and quarterback Caleb Williams returned from injury.
The Bears desperately needed both players after their humiliating Week 5 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The Bears bounced back, beating the Falcons 31-23.
Williams had over 300 passing yards and one touchdown. Although Gordon had a limited snap count, he still recorded three sacks, a career high.
He didn't stop there.
He was on a snap count again on Thursday Night Football against the New England Patriots. Gordon recorded another sack in the 30-24 win over the Patriots.
Gordon now has nine total tackles, five TFLs and four sacks. If he keeps this pace, he'll likely finish as an NFL record holder.
Former New York Jets safety Jamal Adams set the current NFL record for single-season sacks by a defensive back in 2020. He had 9.5 sacks that season.
Given how things have been going, it's looking increasingly likely that Gordon could have 10 sacks by season's end.
Gordon's usage on defense since he came back has been an interesting development so far. Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has used Gordon as an effective weapon in the pass rush, and it's paying dividends.
It's crazy to think what Gordon's stats would be if he was healthy at the beginning of the season.
The Bears will have to get creative to get him involved in the pass rush as the season goes on. It's hard to expect Gordon to record three sacks every game for the rest of the season.
His production may even increase if the Bears determine that he's healthy enough to play on a regular snap count.
It's a good thing that the Bears have time to rest after a short week. Their next game won't be until next Sunday, as they take on the slumping Seattle Seahawks, who are 1-3 in their last four games.
If Gordon's snaps increase, his sack production could as well. This isn't quite the role that Gordon may have imagined when he came back from injury, but he has been a welcome addition to the defense once again.
