Following a dismal offensive showing against Green Bay, hope returns to Chicago as insiders predict the star quarterback’s recovery from a hamstring injury is finally complete.
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams hasn't played in an NFL game since Week 2.
He suffered a hamstring injury against the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth quarter. He exited, and Tyson Bagent stepped in for the rest of the game. The Bears offense got inside the Vikings' red zone, but couldn't score and lost 9-3.
Williams was expected to miss at least 3-4 weeks due to the injury. He was seen at Bears practice for the first time since his injury on Friday, but didn't play in Sunday's 31-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
This was expected, as head coach Ben Johnson himself said Williams wouldn't be back in time for Week 5.
The Bears definitely missed Williams on Sunday. The Packers dominated the Bears on offense and defense throughout the game.
They shut down the running game, which limited the Bears' ability to pass. With the running game limited, Tyson Bagent couldn't do much. He threw two interceptions and was eventually benched in favor of Case Keenum.
Keenum didn't do much better. He had 108 passing yards and one interception. The Packers were well prepared for a Bears offense without Williams.
It was a brutal way to lose. It felt like all the momentum had finally shifted towards the Bears after beating the Packers twice last season. Packers radio felt the same way, but the Bears were not the better team in Week 5.
All of Chicago has been waiting for a positive update on Williams. On Tuesday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport provided one on "The Pat McAfee Show." Rapoport believes Williams has a good chance to return in Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons.
"I think it looks pretty good for this week," Rapoport said. "First of all, he returned to practice Friday of last week, and they listed him as questionable, didn't really have a chance to play last week, but he did work out pregame pretty hard. And so, I've seen that workout, practice Friday. It was a 3–4-week injury. This is the fourth week. There's a pretty good chance we see Caleb Williams back. No disrespect to anyone involved, the Bears will be better when they have one of the quarterbacks in the NFL on the field. Like, that'll be a good thing for sure."
Bagent, Keenum, and the Bears did a great job without their star player. They deserve applause for what they did in the meantime.
Keenum had a tremendous game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football, throwing for 247 passing yards and three total touchdowns. Bagent then came in the following week against the New York Jets and threw an interception early, but settled in and finished with 268 passing yards.
The team didn't get the result that they were hoping for against the Packers. The Bears still went 2-1 in three games without their starting quarterback. That is a job well done by the organization and speaks to where the team is.
Still, there's no denying the offense has desperately missed Williams. Hopefully, for the Bears' sake, Rapoport is right. Williams will take this offense to another level if he can return in Week 6.
The Falcons are no slouch.
When Michael Penix Jr. returned to action, the team looked much better. The same will be true if Williams comes back from his hamstring injury.
Here's hoping Chicago's star is back in action this weekend.
