Buffalo’s shift to a high-pressure, attacking scheme grants the former first-round pick newfound freedom to exploit mismatches and unleash his elite explosiveness across a versatile defensive front.
The Buffalo Bills are expecting a big season from Ed Oliver, especially with the arrival of new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.
Speaking during OTAs, Leonhard made it clear that he believes Oliver could become one of the most disruptive players in Buffalo’s defense this season as the Bills transition into a more aggressive, attacking scheme.
“I think Ed’s going to be really disruptive in this defense,” Leonhard said while discussing Oliver’s role moving forward.
The comments come after an injury-shortened season for Oliver, who dealt with both bicep and knee injuries last year despite appearing to be on pace for one of the best seasons of his career before being slowed down physically.
Now getting healthy again, Oliver appears positioned to take on an even larger role within Leonhard’s system.

One of the biggest differences could be the amount of freedom Oliver is expected to have compared to previous seasons. Leonhard specifically mentioned that the new defensive structure should allow Oliver to play more freely and aggressively, something that naturally fits his style of play.
When speaking earlier this week, Oliver acknowledged the change, referencing the success Leonhard previously had in Denver with aggressive defensive fronts that allowed defensive linemen to attack rather than simply react.
Since being selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Oliver has consistently flashed elite explosiveness and playmaking ability along the defensive line. However, there have also been stretches where fans and analysts believed the former first-round pick still had another level he could reach statistically.
The Bills believe this system could help unlock it.

Under Leonhard, Buffalo’s defense is expected to become faster, more aggressive, and more disruptive overall. Rather than playing conservatively, the Bills appear intent on emphasizing pressure, movement, and attacking the football.
Leonhard also indicated that Buffalo plans to move Oliver and other linemen around the defensive front depending on personnel groupings and formations. In certain looks, Oliver could spend more time aligned on the edge in three-man fronts before sliding back inside when Buffalo shifts into more traditional four-man looks.
That versatility could create more opportunities for Oliver to generate pressure and create mismatches against opposing offensive lines. And if the new system works the way the Bills envision, Oliver could finally be set up for the breakout season many in Buffalo have been waiting to see.
