Bills HC Reacts to Roquan Smith Twisting Josh Allen's Helmet
Nov 3, 2026 3:15 AM

Joe Brady sounds off on the missed penalty that left Josh Allen bloodied, addressing Roquan Smith’s dangerous tackle and the potential league discipline following the controversial non-call.

When Josh Allen scored on the opening drive of the game for the Buffalo Bills, you may have noticed that he got up a little angry.

After getting off the ground, Allen gave Baltimore Ravens cornerback Chidobe Awuzie a little shove. But it wasn't him Allen should've been mad at. Instead, that was linebacker Roquan Smith.

After Allen had crossed the plane for the first score of the game, cameras caught Smith grabbing Allen's facemask and twisting it fully to the side. Not only did the play risk severe injury to Buffalo's franchise quarterback, but the officials---in a game that featured 17 accepted penalties---completely missed a clear personal foul.

Allen didn't appear to suffer any sort of injury and he remained in the game, but it was a topic of discussion after the fact.

On Monday, when meeting with the media, Bills head coach Joe Brady was asked about the play and for his thoughts.

Brady said that he didn't know anything about the play until after the game. In fact, all he saw was Allen get up with some scratches on his face that he felt were just part of what happens when you call quarterback sneaks. He added that, had he known what happened, it could have impacted some play calls later in the game.

Brady went on to say that whether the play was intentional or not, Smith's twisting of the helmet like that is "not something you want to see in football."

He continued to saw that he was surprised there was no penalty called on the play.

"That's obviously not my place," he said.

Moving forward, it's unlikely that Smith will be suspended for the play. What's more likely to happen is that Smith will receive a fine from the league.

It's the second time Smith has gotten away with a facemask on the goalline this year. In Week 3 against the New Orleans Saints, Smith grabbed the facemask of quarterback Tyler Shough and ripped it back. For that, he was fined $11,941. For a repeat infraction, he would be subjected to a fine of $17,911 as per the NFL's collective bargaining agreement.

As for Allen, Brady, and the Bills, all the focus moves to this Monday against the Minnesota Vikings as they try to move to 7-1 and stay atop the AFC East. The team will get an extra day off due to playing on Monday night, meaning the first practice won't come until Thursday afternoon.
