The Bills have made a major shakeup on defense.
The Buffalo Bills have made a big roster move following the conclusion of Week 8 of the NFL season.
Buffalo is releasing safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, who didn't play in the team's win over the Baltimore Ravens over the weekend. Gardner-Johnson had been suspended for one game after a spitting incident during the team's win over the Las Vegas Raiders weeks ago.
The veteran safety had started six games for the Bills this season, and this move now leaves the team thin in the secondary. But Buffalo seems to be sending a message with this decision, likely showing that the team won't tolerate any nonsense from players.
Gardner-Johnson had posted 26 total tackles, with one interception, and two pass deflection this season. The veteran was supposed to be part of the revamped secondary in Buffalo, but his time is now over.
With this move, the Bills may need to add some other players to the roster, bringing more depth to the team. Even before this decision, Buffalo's secondary was one of the weak points of the team, and now the front office has more moves to consider.
Buffalo replaced Gardner-Johnson with veteran Damar Hamlin and Geno Stone last week against the Ravens, and they both impressed the team enough to be comfortable with this move. Against Baltimore, Hamlin posted five combined tackles and one pass deflection.
Gardner-Johnson has tended to overstay his welcome throughout his NFL career, and it seems that the Bills have had enough. The veteran is very talented, but he tends to let his emotions get the best of him at times, and it's cost his teams.
The safety will now look for another job in the NFL, and there could be a few teams interested in his services. But Gardner-Johnson will need to be careful; otherwise, he will only add to the controversial reputation that he has already built for himself.
Buffalo currently owns a record of 6-1 on the season, sitting in first place in the AFC East and the conference as a whole. 2026 has been a good year for the Bills so far, and this team has its sights set on going after a Super Bowl title.
The defense of the Bills has been the major question mark this year, with the group being a work in progress at times. But Buffalo has been working hard to address the problems, understanding that unless changes are made, it could derail the Super Bowl aspirations.
